Wouldn't anyone like a wall-sized Madonna print?
Just got back from Virgin Spirit, a multi-media event at Good Units in the Hudson Hotel in NYC that blended the rare Madonna images of Richard Corman with performances by Jessica 6 and Dan Black and a fashion show by Prince Peter.
Were you there? Hope so.
Anyone who bought prints from me made a good deal...Richard's are all $3,250 from now on.
The space is new and quite amazing, calling to mind the '80s with its rawness. Of course, plastering the walls with vintage Interview covers and eye-popping 36"X36" prints (22 of them) of young Madonna helped with that vintage vibe.
The color shot is from a truly NEVER-EVER-BEFORE-SEEN test Polaroid.
Maybe the most wow-inducing touch was the inclusion of several wall-sized photographic prints on canvas that go for about $7,000. The attendees, many of whom were trendy fashion-show drop-ins, spent a lot of time taking pictures of pictures, and having their pictures taken in front of them.
Yes, that's 94-year-old Eli Wallach in the basement of the Hudson Hotel.
The fashion show had great colors even if it was startlingly brief. I loved Jessica 6! Transsexual lead singer Nomi Ruiz is supersexy onstage, has a terrific voice and rocked a flawless cover of Madonna's "Justify My Love" (alas, it missed the '80s theme by thismuch). The follow-up set by Dan Black was also impressive, and his "Into the Groove" was another fantastic cover version.
The evening was a blast. I hope everyone who wanted to go was able to get in—the list was pretty severe. (I did see several readers, so I know all the names were in...it was just a matter of whether the right list was consulted once you got there.)
Me with the lovely and talented Nomi.
More images after the jump...
T-shirts were sold for $25. A part of proceeds were for Haiti.
The artist being interviewed in front of his work.
When I tracked Richard down after seeing his credit on a tear sheet, I never dreamed he'd mount this show.
The backdrop for the perfs and fashion show: MADONNA MANIA.
Ambience.
I struck some poses.
Madonna-themed drinks for all!

Jessica 6 creates an early-Madonna impression.
One of Richard's rarer images, featuring a Keith Haring-esque treatment.
Another rare shot from an early sweater series only published in Italy.
At the end of the night, José and I did the pretend A-list thang.
