Not Down, But Dirrty Comments (20)

Christina-aguilera-burlesque-late-night-05 I still say Burlesque is a bomb—or at least a bomblet. But to follow up on the contentious conversation about the Christina Aguilera/Cher vehicle (it's a bicycle built for two and nobody's wearing panties), I checked out its daily numbers and I was wrong about at least one thing—it's not dropping like a rock. In fact, it was up to #3 on Tuesday (with the weekend kiddie competition out of the picture).

Will it recoup? I still say no. It would have to make a lot of fucking money to make back the $55 million (or more) it cost to make, not to mention the blank-check promotion it's gotten. But it might have slightly longer than little-person legs after all. And its fans are hoping the Golden Globes, with its non-competitive comedy/musical category—in which even the cruddy Nine managed to get nominated—might help Burlesque over time.

With a review from the Catholic Office of Film and Broadcasting that calls it "initially pleasant but ultimately sordid," maybe it's better for me to root for the movie, no matter how potentially lame it still looks to me! (They also point out that the film is morally offensive for having a "benign view of premarital sex and homosexuality" and its "possible acceptance of abortion, an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, fleeting rear nudity, often suggestive and briefly obscene dancing, several uses of profanity and one rough and some crude and crass terms.")
