Fuck The Lesser Gays Comments (9)

I think it's great that Elton John is helping to raise money for the same-sex marriage fight, and his words at a recent AFER fund-raiser are welcome:

Jigsawimage "I don't have everything because I don't have the respect of people like the church or like politicians who tell me that I'm not worthy, that I'm lesser because I'm gay, well FUCK YOU!"

However, just five years ago, he was the tool who was saying:

"I don’t want to be married. I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership. The word 'marriage,' I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships."

In 2005, he was a very worldly man in his late fifties. For him to have thought civil unions were completely equal to marriage is inexcusable. For him to not want to be married himself, that's his business—I don't want to be married either, nor would I join the military, but I'm not dumb enough not to be able to see the civil-rights issues involved—but for him to use his platform to belittle that desire in others at a time when the struggle for our rights was heating up is our business.

I hope John changed his tune, and I think raising money for a good cause is always a good thing. But I'm suspicious of anyone who would work Rush Limbaugh's wedding and turn around and say not that the money was for anti-Rush causes but that playing the gig was a way of reaching across the political divide.
