In "honor" of those 62 reps in Iowa who voted in favor of eventually allowing Iowans to vote on marriage equality (and civil unions and probably two dudes shaking hands and getting a warm feeling from it), blogger Heidi is asking that we all donate a little something to One Iowa, which lobbies hard for LGBTQ rights in the state. She was unable to speak against HJR6 the night it was being considered—like the majority of schedule speakers, time ran out. But here are her prepared remarks.
Also, her hubby, Dan, blogs about his experience listening to all the impassioned speeches on behalf of equality, which still could not move Iowa's Republicans (and three Dems) on the issue.
Our civil rights struggle is something we will definitely look back on in disbelief, but we won't be laughing at how silly it all was.
This is not a states' rights issue, this is a civil rights issue. Period.
