When I met Lisa Ling regarding her Our America series, I was uncomfortable with the bits I saw of her "Pray Away the Gay?" segment, which I felt might legitimize Exodus International and ex-gay ministries. I asked her a direct question about that very topic. Her answer is here.
While I think Wayne Besen, in his rebuttal to the episode above, overstates by suggesting Ling may have a (presumably anti-gay) agenda, I do think he's got a rock-solid point that the show was duped regarding one of its interviewees.
My personal impression of Ling was that she is a religious skeptic and is pro-gay. But with the episode, I think she made a mistake typical of liberals in the media—she bent so far over backwards to try to hear both sides that she wound up making a case for the opposite side of that on which she undoubtedly stands.
Here, Ling expresses discomfort with shows that "tell you what to think":
For me, the problem is that she did not want to tell us to think that being gay is okay, and that advocating for people to renounce their homosexuality is not okay. In my opinion, that is not even-handed, that is entertaining a question that should not be entertained.
I've enjoyed Ling's other episodes and am disappointed this one went off the rails.
