Sparkle, the last film to feature a performance by the late Whitney Houston, seems to have come in at #5 at the box office its opening weekend. The film earned only $12 million despite copious promo and the built-in interest caused by Houston's shocking passing. Number one this week was another weak debut—the second Expendables. I was surprised more people weren't moved to see Whitney one last time, even in a not-so-warmly-received film, considering she's gotten strong reviews for her performance. Jordin Sparks probably won't be carrying a movie again soon—she was almost universally disliked as the lead.
Somewhere, Irene Cara is saying, "I told you not to remake this!"
