Today is the 60th anniversary of the first sex-reassignment surgery following hormone treatments, a procedure that gave the world Christine Jorgensen. Jorgensen was seen by many as a precursor of the coming sexual revolution. She fought many battles—the gender on her birth certificate, the right to be married—that many others wouldn't fight until years later. She ended up an outspoken and opinionated activist and a nightclub entertainer.

She died after a long battle with bladder and lung cancer in 1989.
