Boy Culture Turns 8: My 100 Favorite Posts! Comments (0)

BoyCultureBlogYou need a little (Boy) Culture!

StripperIt blows my mind to realize that Boy Culture is now eight years old. I can still remember the joy I felt when I figured out how to post, how to upload an image and how to embed a video. I remember every time a post blew up, bringing in hits and new viewers. I remember the longtime commenters, the trolls, the spam and the never-ending (and validating!) pitches and free tickets and photographers' snaps of half- or all-naked male models.

RuPaul-Drag-RaceShooting for my blog has never been a drag.

Cone-boyI've used Boy Culture to express myself, to help express others and to connect to people internationally.

I've also used it to show off my humor (both high and low), to flaunt my obsessions, to reality-test my sexual diversions and perversions, to laud the art I love, to lash out against the enemies of gay people and to broadcast my admiration for Madonna.

I want to thank you all for having read this blog over the years. It's a very hard thing to maintain, and it will not be maintained forever. But each time I get some positive (or even just meaningful) feedback, each time my posts are shared on social media, each time something I've written elicits a response, it keeps me going that much longer.

Madonna-stepmother-Joan-MDNAMadonna's stepmother was not impressed.

Thank you. Please enjoy my 100 favorite posts, please let me know if you're reading any old ones for the first time and are liking them and, most of all, please share this entire post far and wide to help get my work out there.

TOTALLY RANDOM LISTS (2011—2013)

I've gotten way into lists. Way. You'll find more of my lists higher up on, uh, this particular list. But the ones that are just completely random go here because I worked my ass off on them, because I love them and because—judging from Quantcast data—you like 'em, too.

REVIEWS: MUSIC, MOVIES, BOOKS, THEATER & WEB SERIES (2005—2013)

By now, you might realize this list will actually contain way more than 100 posts. My trick is to stuff multiples into single positions on my list. I can't help it, because it's a Sophie's Choice when it comes to things like picking favorite reviews. But here are some of my absolute favorites, in music, then movies, then books, theater, and finally in Web series.

CHER LIVE (2013)

I loved Cher when I was a kid, admiring her TV show. I liked her as a young man, enjoying her work in movies like Silkwood and 'Jimmy Dean. I fell out of love when she became a plastic surgery junkie and infomercial queen. It didn't help that she called Madonna a cunt. But I fell back in love over time. She still gives the best interviews ever, and, as I learned this past year, her briefest appearances at events can still drive the gays crazy.

IT'S A GAY MAN'S WORLD (2013)

SAVE UP ALL YOUR PIERS: CHER SERENADES THE FAITHFUL (2013)

My second big Cher event was amazing in that I was literally just a few feet from the icon, giving me access to great photos and video that went everywhere. I have friends who consistently say to me, "Can't you just put the camera down and enjoy?" But this is my way of enjoying something—documenting it. Oh, and the menz at Cher's gig were fucking hawt.

RANDOM STARFUCKING (2009—2013)

It's no secret that I love meeting famous people and getting them to pose for pic-withs. It's something I started in college, gave up for a long time, thinking it was lame and undignified (and missing all but Betty White of the Golden Girls in the process), and returned to with a vengeance in my thirties. You'll find my autograph shows in the Top 10.

THOMAS ROBERTS AS METAPHOR (2007—2013)

I'm not a big fan, nor am I a mortal enemy, of Thomas Roberts. He struck me as a positive guy, for the most part, prior to his stupid, poorly justified hosting of Miss Universe recently. But along with that misstep, he was also embroiled in an earlier controversy I addressed, the one involving his nude images and whether blogger Kenneth Walsh should have published them. These pieces make nice companion pieces.

I will always regret not meeting Farley Granger, the star of Hitchcock's Rope and Strangers on a Train. My never-completed series meant to compare Madonna, at age 50, to 50 other famous women when they were the same age. Should've been a book for all the effort! GLAAD can throw some pretty great events, actually. The red carpets at GLAAD events are less cutthroat than any of the others I've attended. What a blast this evening was! I got great images and finally got to meet my boss, Anderson Cooper, and snag a picture with him. (Later, when Anderson Live ended and I attended our staff series-wrap party, I got an even better shot, of myself and a co-worker kissing a shocked-looking AC on the cheek. He's a really sweet, approachable guy.) More from the same event here and here.

BAREBACKING (2007—2008)

Sex without a condom is amazing. I get that. But I don't get why so many gay men callously disregard the lessons of our recent past in seeking and even fetishizing unprotected anal sex. And I'll never understand why so many of us say that bareback porn is a "fantasy" when it involves real people taking real risks to make it. Have we forgotten this already?

PEREZ HILTON (2009)

Writing about Perez Hilton (or Madonna or Lady Gaga or, etc.) is always more fun and more successful, creatively speaking, if I'm using them as a jumping-off point to write about bigger issues. I think I've done that particularly well with Perez, perhaps because I was never a big fan of his (as I am of Madonna and as I sometimes am of Lady Gaga), so it was easier to focus on more than just his persona.

HARVEY MILKING IT (2009)

My first stab at defending Perez Hilton. He enjoyed my "always fair" essays and we became friendly via e-mail and on Facebook. Later, I linked a story he posted on Facebook (thinking I was doing a good thing by sourcing him—something he only did three times for me) and he unfriended me (thinking I was betraying a confidence, as it was his personal Facebook account and a publicist got pissed at the content of the info I shared). It really surprised me how unforgiving he was, considering he makes his living razzing people mercilessly and seems to expect them to kinda roll with his punches. I told him I meant no harm, he acknowledged that...but that was that. Love him (wait, who besides his family is willing to say they "love" him?) or hate him, you have to respect the enormity of his impact on pop culture—bitch is important, and bitch is deserving of being taken seriously.

I was on the Steve Grandwagon from Day One, communicating with him enthusiastically about his talent and giving—unasked for!—my advice on how he should handle the avalanche of racy images surfacing from his past. He was a sweetheart, but also thoughtful and smart. I have been proud to watch his journey, and this interview was one of my favorite things I ever published. He has told me it's his favorite interview he's done, too, even if it opened a can of worms with some anti-Grandstanders, who felt he was too soft on ex-gay therapy. (For the record: He's against. Very against.) I was also proud of my response to a malevolent take-down piece Grand endured from a blogger who thought a drinker who falls in love with a straight guy was a bad image for the gay movement. (The writer's own personal résumé wasn't exactly playing against type.: AIN'T THE LOVE THAT DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME GRAND? (2013). BROADWAY BARES (2008—2013)

I  had never so much as seen a male stripper when my friend Jason pushed me hard to come to Broadway Bares with him. Manhattan's annual burlesque charity show for HIV/AIDS was a real eye-opener (and an effective wallet-opener, too). I quickly became enamored of, well, most of the guys on the stage. I wound up becoming a fixture at the shows (is that a..."good" thing?), and my coverage has delighted and, occasionally, horrified the participants. (The kindest take-down notice I ever got was when Guto Bittencourt took me to coffee to politely ask if I might consider removing a video of him in the nude. Some others were a little more direct, but no one was ever rude or freaked out.) I think most of the participants are, or should be, proud of their bodies and their artistic contributions to this unique event. I'm grouping all of my coverage of Bares and of its related Solo Strips events here, roughly in chronological order...

AUTOGRAPH SHOWS (2010—2013)

All of my posts related to autograph shows—and there have been so many!—are like one, gigantic post in my mind, and so I'm grouping them all here at #5. I first got into these things after reading an old story on the Internet about a show in the '70s at which a '30s Western star appeared, even though her face was devastated by cancer. I got the idea to do a book or a movie on these shows, so I dug into my pocket and attended one in Jersey (Chiller Theatre) and then one in Burbank (The Hollywood Show). Dozens later, I still keep going back. I started out "above it," but I'm not definitely "of it," as well. They're not the posts that get the most hits, but they have more of my love than most. What follows are all of my autograph show posts (I think!) in roughly chronological order:

DRAWN TOGETHER (2008)

How my desire to draw related to my secret desire to...y'know. I think if you read this, you'll be able to see why this is one of my absolute favorite posts.

GUYDAR (1/17/2008—2013) & ENDS OF THE WORLD (1/13/2008—2013)

For many years, I ran countless photos—all taken surreptitiously—of sexy men I encountered on the streets of (mostly) NYC. I wound up expanding to include some memorable reader contributions, including serial posts from Italy and Waikiki. At one point, I polled readers to ask who found it "creepy," who found it "hot" and who found it "creepy but hot." Overwhelmingly, "hot" and "creepy but hot" won the day. To answer some oft-posed questions: I never get caught, I never aim and yes, I think they're art. Also, they're not illegal—I don't shoot where there is a reasonable expection of privacy. I also avoid anyone I think might be under 18. No, I don't intentionally avoid men of color. Oh, and all my surreptitious photography is now found at my Instagram.

BURNING MAN (2007)

This tribute to my late high school friend and first romance is often cited by readers as a favorite. It's probably because I felt every word of it, and wrote it while still in shock after discovering a person I'd long been out of touch with was actually already long in his grave.

FROM BOY TO MAN: BC B.C. (2007)

This post encompasses the entire history of the novella I wrote in college that would become my novel Boy Culture, as well as the details leading up to the pretty great movie adaptation. I launched my blog to plug the movie, and this post did that while also paying tribute to the source material—this is how it all came together. For those reasons, I will always think of this post first when I think of the most personally important things I've posted at Boy Culture. I hope you will enjoy this post, and I hope you enjoyed this expansive walk (marathon?) down memory lane.

Cover to Cover: First & Last Sentences of Gay Novels & Novellas

I'm in love with this post, which collects over 120 gay novels and novellas and presents their first and last sentences, plus their jacket art. I think it becomes a great gay reading list, even though I wasn't intending to gather only the best of the best so much as examples of the wide variety of novels correctly categorized as "gay."
