BOY CULTURE Turns 12: 50 Links To Celebrate! Comments (0)

ThirstyBoy of my dreams
It's been another year of Boy Culture, and that makes 12.

Img100 copy 2 Img100 copy 3I've spent a decade and change of my life posting think-pieces, don't-think pieces, sexy butts, sexy bulges, infuriated protests, news of the day, news of the gay, surreptitious photos, self-promotion, self-deprecation, humor, pathos, dead celebrities, celebrities you thought were dead and what evidence of what passes for my powers of observation. I've acquired fans and anti-fans and momentarily interested passers-by.

The first blogs I encountered (I was a late bloomer) were Perez Hilton and Pink Is the New Blog ... and I barely understood how to read them. The concept of scrolling down for information, which is now becoming passé, was so new to me, they just looked like a jumble of information.

As I became accustomed to the idea, I noticed Towleroad — a specifically gay blog. Color me inspired, and by the end of 2005, when I was living in misery in a temporary apartment across the street from the dream apartment into which I would soon move (and eventually lose), I spent my free time figuring out Typepad. I was off-the-charts thrilled when I became adept at uploading images and formatting captions. I had previously experimented with Blogger, but now I was in business. Posting some old Blogger pieces and plunging ahead with all my thoughts on Madonna's new album Confessions on a Dance Floor, Boy Culture was born.

Why did I start this blog? (Besides as an excuse to disseminate images of guys in their skivvies.)

Mainly, I thought I could promote the theatrical release of the movie of the same name, which Allan Brocka had co-adapted and directed from my debut novel (new edition coming). I was proud of the movie and wanted to help get the word out, so I posted about each screening in-between quirky, topical entries on music, movies, Madonna and me. Just this past year, I used my blog (and Kickstarter) to help get the word out about the sequel to that movie — to which you can still donate here. I would also eventually lean on Boy Culture to help create awareness of Encyclopedia Madonnica 20, which was a huge hit.

THIRSTY

Over time, I began to crave hits, much like Diana Ross in the late '80s or Madonna now. That's the thing about a blog. You may not create it to change the world, but even if it's highly personal in nature, it's a hungry-and-thirsty blank slate that needs to be filled every day, so when you hit upon a winning formula — something that attracts eyes — it's hard to resist revisiting that formula. In that way, my blog probably became far more lascivious.

I probably have as well.

I've struggled over what to do with my blog. I had a preliminary offer to buy it once for $10,000, but the offer went away. I used to make more on ads right after I left a restrictive ad network during a period in which I was unemployed (so was able to pour content into it around the clock), but in truth I've never made much money on this venture, and yet I have devoted to it an unknowable number of hours. It almost certainly hurt my relationship, now ended, and I have at times wondered if my drive to keep Boy Culture going has kept me from writing another novel or successfully devising a plan to maintain that dream apartment into which I moved.

A painfully accurate piece was published by Gay Pop Buzz on why gay blogs are disappearing — it is harrowing to read, and not inaccurate in any regard.

One of the worst side effects of blogging and/or having a high profile on social media is that a huge number of people you've never met will develop opinions about you without your being aware of it in real time. Mostly, you win warm appreciation from like-minded individuals. This is so gratifying. You also earn enmity from people who are your ideological opposites anyway, which is also so gratifying. What you don't think about is that people who have been your friends or who actually are mostly like-minded individuals, can come to resent you over a single, off-the-cuff opinion you expressed and forgot about. If your friend says something small-minded or offensive, you can excuse it because they are your friend, you know their totality. If someone says something with which you disagree or that actually offends you, it's easier to decide the person is a jerk-off.

I've had some extremely unpleasant experiences in this regard. Outside of the bummer it is when a longtime Facebook friend you really like makes their first-ever comment in order to snarkily smack you down publicly in a way that betrays a much deeper history of disliking you for reasons you can't guess, I've had three acquaintances send me a series of creepily vicious personal take-down notes over ... absolutely nothing. More evidence that what you put out into the world is often taken to heart, and also evidence that seemingly normal people are borderline nuts. I have also had some outrageously uncalled for comments and emails from young Gaga fans saying they hope I choke on my AIDS meds, and I have dealt with and am dealing with an actual stalker, who has threatened my life. Ironically, he's doing it because he thinks I am a terrorist.

Again, people are borderline nuts.

In light of the futile nature of this pursuit, and in light of the negatives, I've thought of abandoning the blog...

Donna-Millers-A Star-Is-DeadWhen to call it? (Image via NBC)

... but even though it's been in some ways a productivity-anesthetizer, it has also brought me many positive things: I've kept my writing ability well-oiled, I'm extremely well-informed on news events and have an opinion on every one of them, I get wonderful movie and theater invites, I've interviewed many fascinating subjects, received tons of free products, I've interacted with the LGBT community deeply — and I've received lovely comments and praise from so many of you.

*******FINACL BW COVER JPEG Starf*cker-Matthew-Rettenmund-Lethe-PressAm I a brand? Yes! Maybe a little one, but a brand, nonetheless.

What can you do to help me out? You can share all posts you enjoy. You can follow/like me on all possible social media (see below). You can buy my books via links in this post. If you're rich, you can send me a cash gift (Paypal matthewrettenmund@gmail.com), which of course is not required.

Ultimately, even though I have mixed feelings about the future of the blog — change it? leave it the same? drop it? — today I am celebrating the amazing-even-to-me reality that I have managed to maintain this enterprise for a dozen freakin' years.

I'm happy. I'm relieved. I'm grateful to you. I'm exhausted.

As always, you can find me on Facebook (personal and blog), Instagram (surreptitious shots of guys here, general Boy Culture fun here, Madonna here, classic Hollywood here), Twitter and YouTube (plus, here are my YouTube greatest hits— updated today!). I also have a Work Unfriendly dirty Tumblr.

I would most appreciate it if you would check out my new-old nostalgia blog, too: Gr8erDays.

Screen Shot 2017-11-04 at 3.45.30 PM

For many years, I've posted countless photos—all taken surreptitiously—of sexy men I encounter on the streets of (mostly) NYC. At one point, I polled readers to ask who found it creepy, who found it hot and who found it creepy but hot. Hot won the day. To answer some oft-posed questions: I've only been caught once (called a fag, threatened to be spat upon), I never aim and yes, I think they're art. Also, they're not illegal — I don't shoot where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. I also avoid anyone I think might be under 18. No, I don't intentionally avoid men of color. Oh, and my surreptitious photography is also found at my Instagram.

This post encompasses the entire history of the novella I wrote in college that would become my novel Boy Culture, as well as the details leading up to the pretty great movie adaptation. I launched my blog to plug the movie, and this post did that while also paying tribute to the source material—this is how it all came together. For those reasons, I will always think of this post first when I think of the most personally important things I've posted at Boy Culture. He was a sweetheart, but also thoughtful and smart. I have been proud to watch his journey. I was also proud of my response to a malevolent take-down piece Grand endured from a blogger who thought a drinker who falls in love with a straight guy was a bad image for the gay movement. The writer's own personal résumé wasn't exactly playing against type: AIN'T THE LOVE THAT DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME GRAND? (2013). BURNING MAN (2007)

This tribute to my late high school friend and first romance is often cited by readers as a favorite. It's probably because I felt every word of it, and wrote it while still in shock after discovering a person I'd long been out of touch with was actually already long in his grave. A version of this appears in my memoir Starf*cker. (Please don't buy it now if you never did yet; the publisher has never sent me any accounting on sales so I'm in the process of taking back the rights. Hoo-boy.)
