OUT Explores The Nuances Of Love With High-Profile Couples Comments (0)

Screen Shot 2016-12-29 at 11.36.09 AM(Images via Out Magazine)

Out really delivers with its pair of Love Story-themed covers, one of which features actor/Internet personality Matthew Wilkas and his boyfriend Gus Kenworthy, the Olympic athlete, the other of which showcases once-you've-gone-Orange Is the New Black-you'll-never-go-back girlfriends Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli — just beautiful.

I was particularly interested in the very real approach the guys are taking in their relationship, with Wilkas saying:

For me, being apart a lot of the time is a good thing, but I don’t think Gus feels that way. He doesn’t really want a long-distance relationship. I don’t either but think time apart is valuable and can work.

Kenworthy says:

All relationships take work, and we’ve definitely begun to realize that…I was in a relationship from 18-23, and I still haven’t really experienced that much sexually. I wouldn’t want to ever sacrifice my relationship with Matt just to go out and get that out of my system, but we’ve also talked about that and he doesn’t want to deprive me of experiencing anything while I’m still young. I don’t necessarily know what that means. But we’re not in an open relationship and we’re not breaking up. But we’re also not getting married.

OUT100 & About Comments (0)

I went to the OUT100 party in NYC last night, a bash meant to celebrate the magazine's annual list of 100 influential LGBTQ+ people.

I didn't have the energy to do red-carpet coverage, as I have at times; I could live without doing another red carpet for the rest of my life. This week has been draining, too. Additionally, I have been upset with Out recently for its, in my opinion, unnecessarily deferential piece on right-wing agitator Milo Yiannopoulous, who was given a dedicated photo shoot that suggested he was merely a clown. He's worse.

But I went and it was relatively nice to be surrounded by—as my friend called it—brethren. (Forgive the male lean.)

The party was smaller than usual, and I didn't spot stars. Was sorry to realize later that I missed Joanna Cassidy, among others.

The sad part was everyone had stories about family, friends and co-workers who had voted for Trump and who said they weren't against gay people, but ...

Then as I was leaving, a black SUV with the alarming vanity license A ARYAN picked up some of the people from the event. I have to believe it was a hired ride and that there was no connection, but seeing that after hearing stories that have popped up about kids and others attacking people for being gay or of color in Trump's wake was eerie.

I also witnessed a white Wall Street type being extra-rude to an Indian clerk at the 7-11 on my block, annoyed that the guy's accent seemed to slow his ability to quickly retrieve a favored brand of cigarettes. I wasn't dreaming, because as I walked home, the Wall Street type's female companion shouted WHAT? and stopped walking with him. He kept going and cockily called back, C'mon, we're not kids. Her response was, Do you realize women bleed to death from illegal abortions? Literally bleed to death?

I'd also heard a well-heeled black women telling a friend, Well, Trump's a New Yorker, I really don't believe he ... And the rest, unheard, was obvious.

I don't know if Trump despises gay people, though it's a safe bet he has a macho disdain for us. (Ask Roy Cohn how he feels about gays with HIV.) But I don't care. I'm not trying to determine if he is anti-gay, I already know he has no choice but to do anti-gay things to please his constituency.

So that was my night, and that is why the very nice party felt very, very somber.

Sexy Garrett Clayton: OUT/In Comments (0)

Opener-750(Image by Brian Kaminski/Out)

Disney Channel star Garrett Clayton is doing what most kid stars do ASAP—he's ditching that label by embracing the total opposite, playing gay-porn star Brent Corrigan in King Cobra.

He's also politely dodging questions about his sexual orientation, which is fairly ironic considering it's National Coming Out Day and the piece in question is a new Q&A with Out. The magazine's very name takes for granted the importance of being publicly honest about one's orientation

Clayton says:

I don’t really like talking about my personal life. I like a certain amount of veil. I’ve been very lucky this year. I haven’t been brought down because people are focused on who I’m dating, what I’m eating, or what handbag is the best handbag — that’s so cheap to me. But if others want to open up about their personal lives, that is their choice. It’s not for me to judge.

Not wild about this kind of evasion when directly asked.

Photographer On Milo Yiannopoulos: He's Faking It; SALON On Milo Yiannopoulos: No, He's Not Comments (0)

Screen Shot 2016-09-22 at 10.24.13 AM(Video still via Salon)

Jill Greenberg, who accepted the assignment to shoot Milo Yiannopoulos for Out, says she thinks he's just faking his persona. Amanda Marcotte of Salon—who was on the receiving end of a lecture by Yiannopoulous during the shoot and who he later called a bitch—thinks he's deadly serious.

Check out Salon's piece on the shoot for Out here.

Regardless, Salon covered Yiannopoulous in the way Out could have and should have and did not.

Out did a huge disservice to LGBTQ people and progressives in general by choosing to present a poisonous figure as a harmless clown, and Chadwick Moore's profile was utterly neutral and banal.

We don't need that. We don't need enablers who pretend they're provocateurs, and who argue that being provocative is more important than who you're provoking and why.

OUT-Spoken: Colton Haynes On Being Closeted, Those XY Images, Noah Galvin's Insult & More Comments (0)

Cover-750(Image by Blair Getz Mezibov for Out)

Out corners coverguy Colton Haynes on every topic you'd wish for, including...

Noah Galvin

When I came out, Noah tweeted, ‘Welcome to the family,’ and ‘So proud of you.’ I have the tweets saved on my phone. Then, all of a sudden, I’m the worst, I’m a terrible person, and I’m a shame of the gay community. I think just having enough nerve and guts to come out in any way is a lot. It was really an emotional thing for me. And for that to be discredited by someone who has never met me was upsetting. He has no idea what I’ve been through. And I can’t sit here and have a conversation about Noah because I don’t know him either.”

Those XY Photos His Lawyers Tried to Bury

I looked like I was fucking gay-bashing. Like I hated myself or I hated the gays, which was never the intention at all. I was just young and trying to make it in this town and doing what these people were telling me to do.

And more. Read here for his thoughtful interview.
