Boy Culture Turns 6: My Favorite Posts Comments (13)

IMG_7536Prove it!

As of midnight last night, it was exactly six years since my first post. It's been a tough thing to keep up with a dayjob and outside activities, and just when I think I might walk away, a valuable connection or interesting opportunity or a kind word comes my way. Thank you all for reading me.

Here are my favorite 100+ posts out of nearly 11,000. Please take some time to read (or re-read!) a couple and tweet or Facebook any you like.

xoxo Matt

Boy Culture Turns 5: My Favorite Posts Comments (23)

Img_0736As of midnight tonight, it will be exactly five years since my first post. It's hard to imagine it's been that long, and a lot's changed—the tone and subject matter are different, how often I post, my limits (no nudity in a couple of years due to ad constraints). I've devoted a crazy amount of time and money and energy to this blog for a very small financial return (you couldn't guess low enough), but it's always rewarding to have this forum with which to express myself, keep my writing ability fluid, perhaps influence a couple of people here and there, share obsessions with strangers (in both senses of the word) and learn new things.

6wzn3lxTake That's Howard...can you believe this happened onstage at a pop concert?

Here are some of the posts that were most important to Boy Culture's history. For the uninitiated, some of the oldest ones refer to Boy Culture, the movie made of my novel; I started the blog at the time Boy Culture was being filmed as a way to keep people informed of the progress...and it all snowballed from there.

Some of these posts are milestones when it comes to the hits they provided but most are filled with original writing and/or photography and video and are just the posts of which I'm proudest. I hope you'll take some time to click on them and send their links around to others—and some time is what you'll need...

Bear And Grin It Comments (0)

Went to the Quad tonight for the 7:15 show of BearCity, Doug Langway's bear rom com about a group of men looking for love, self-acceptance and the occasional cheap thrill, and was surprised how much of a good time I wound up having.

BEARCITY Cast & Creators @ The Quad NYC Premiere 10.22.10 from Matthew Rettenmund on Vimeo.

BearCity2 BearCity—co-written by Langway with film writer Lawrence Ferber—is sort of like a hairy, white Noah's Arc with some Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City thrown in. Tyler (first-time film actor Joe Conti) is a preppy thesp who's sick of acting like he isn't wildly attracted to bears. He meets furry partners Brent (Big Gay Sketch Show's Stephen Guarino) and Fred (Brian Keane) and is taken under their paws, finding himself introduced to 400-pound Michael (Gregory Gunter) and his cubby hubby BF Carlos (James Martinez) as well as the hottest bear in town, silver-haired and silver tongued Roger (CSI's Gerald McCullouch). Instant community!

ROUNDUP-BEAR-articleLargeAre they hirsute-able for each other?

Tyler falls hard for Roger, who seems to resist returning the favor to protect his rep among the muscle bears—as much as Tyler has felt expressing his attraction to bears to be a second coming out, Roger feels the same way about expressing his attraction to a non-bear.

I know Sex wasn't good for me, but I'm surprised it's so flaccid at the box office—comparing the first flick's opening weekend with the second's, it's more than 40% off. Worse, I would bet this installment drops 70% or something crazy next weekend.

Queens Of The Desert: A Review Of Sex And The City 2 Comments (8)

SATC2-12658r

Florence of Arabia

I was one of the few who mostly liked the first Sex and the City movie. I was perplexed why it was so thoroughly panned by critics (even making some year's-worst lists)—it was a faithful extension of the show, albeit one with a couple of confounding plot points. I felt the parts that bugged me bugged me in a good way, a provocative way. Like sex, even the lamest orgasm is right on the money, right?

Challenging that notion, Sex and the City 2 is definitely a bit of a boner-killer.

SATC2-14314r

A woman who doesn't know her place...until she does

I knew I was in trouble when director and writer Michael Patrick King stated he'd made this film in response to seeing the series' fans dressing up and partying in the aisles when seeing the first flick. He wanted to extend the party. A film made for that purpose was only ever going to be shallow; and a Sex and the City created strictly for the fun of it, all party instead of part party, part museum, part high-end store, part shrink session, was bound to wind up a caricature of itself.

SPOILERS AHEAD...

Straight Sex Comments (3)

Michael-patrick-king-rehearsal-greenwich-mrf58WMichael Patrick King wouldn't admit that Sex and the City appeals to gay men more than straight men, and now (with thanks to Frank for the link) he's gone and written a blog at Daily Beast that presumes exactly that—why else would he be so curious about and thrilled by evidence of straight men liking his series?

I don't have anything against the guy, but I don't know why he seems so hung up on this point that he can't joke freely about the obvious fact that gay men are way, way more likely to dig SATC than straight men. He's making bazillions of dollars...why must he pretend that the film reaches even more people than it already does?

For The Comeback alone, I can forgive him. If he stops pushing it!

Sexy in the city

The cast of Sex and the City 2 (plus many glittering hangers-on) appeared in NYC to launch the film that opens with midnight showings tomorrow. Everyone (except for Liza Minnelli) looked great. Enjoy this last bit of positivity before I post my review just after it opens...
