Sold To The Gay American: GLAAD's OUTAuction 2011 Comments (1)

I'm way behind on my blogging thanks to a last-minute trip to Vegas and some work drama, but I wanted to be sure I wrote about GLAAD's 10th Annual OUTAuction, held this past Sunday at the Metropolitan Pavilion on W. 18th St.

I landed at JFK, went home, showered and readied myself, and immediately turned around to get to the carpet on time. The event had originally included Jonathan Groff (who I've seen four times in the past couple of weeks but resisted assaulting for a pic-with since I'd be seeing him here), but Groff was suddenly unavailable after confirming. He wasn't the only one—it was pretty ridiculous how many people scheduled to attend did not, including Ramona Singer (who was lazily tweeting about a romantic weekend she was having out of the city), Anika Noni Rose and Anthony Rapp.

I was the only person on the carpet doing video interviews, and I didn't do many, just the event's special performer Kimberely Locke ("Do I look good???" she playfully asked me before we began) and the most famous face to attend, MSNBC's Thomas Roberts. I asked them both what part of them would go for the most money if they were to auction it off, thinking they'd opt for something like "my sincerity" or "my loyalty." Instead, Kimberley opted for her "girls" (they are spectacular) and Thomas, smiling at the implications, settled on his eyes. (Though any fool knows his behind is the anchor of the Thomas Roberts show!)

The funniest part of the carpet was when my "date," ginger model (and model ginger) Mark MacKillop, arrived and crashed it. Hey, he's over six feet tall and is striking so gave the carpet some much-needed glamour, but I was dying and hoping GLAAD wouldn't be mad. They weren't. Mark's got an expression that says "I mean business," so it was cute when BroadwayWorld.com's Linda Lenzi encouraged him, "Can I get a tiny smile?" only to be met with an even more intensely brooding glare. Loved meeting her and her sidekick, Broadway star/hottie Ruben Flores. (Linda's amazing coverage is here.)

Ho Mo Comments (1)

Mo Rocca gives up his first serious interview about being gay here. He's been out, but never really talks about it so flies under the gaydar. As you can see from the above Broadway Bares pic I took in '09, he's not only a stealth gay guy, he's also a stealth stone fox.

Fur Real Comments (1)

Ben Cohen tells The Six Pack all about his famously furry chest, which apparently is not always so shaggy:

"Do you know what? I do shave my chest now and again...I know, sorry...when they wax it I get tears in my eyes."

Apparently, he has done it because his children would tug on his chest hair. There is also scoop on belly-button lint.

Oh, and he has an anti-bullying campaign to talk about. Have a listen.

Left Chris Alone Comments (0)

Chris Crocker, the original bullied gay teen, gives a frank and interesting interview to The Six Pack:

"I've had people walk up to me and tell me I'm the reason they get based...I only represent the 1% of the gay community which I happen to represent, which is myself...Just 'cause I can make fun of myself doesn't mean I want anyone to get made fun of."

He also talks about being left behind after almost landing a Logo deal and being iced out by rival Perez Hilton.

Open Mike Comments (0)

The Six Pack packs in a good Q&A with Mike Rogers of BlogActive.com, who always seems to know exactly who's gay and who isn't gay in the world of politics. He called Larry Craig so far back Craig was probably still calling anal sex "Greek active" and Rogers has never been wrong.

Of the recently out Mehlman, who's been getting support from recently out Roy Ashburn:

"Here’s a man who did exactly what Ken Mehlman did for many many years….Any time anybody comes out and is able to say I’m gay, this is a good thing.  Someone like Ken Mehlman has been so heinous when you look at what he has done…There’s so much that he should be atoning for….and someone like Roy Ashburn of course will come to the defense of a Ken Mehlman because he’s really coming to the defense of himself….I’m glad to see that Ashburn has his changed ways, but Ken Mehlman has some answering to do."

Rogers correctly identifies Charlie Crist as amoral and also touches on Bill Hemmer...

A Frank Discussion Comments (7)

The Six Pack has Barney Frank's first post-Prop 8 interview, and it's chock-full of interesting morsels, like his reiteration that he thinks President Obama's official stance on marriage equality is a political calculation.

20100716_senbrown_190x190 One thing that sticks in my gay craw: He wags his finger at Kathy Griffin's joke about Scott Brown's daughters, saying they "didn't choose to be in politics and they shouldn't be targets" without acknowledging that they did choose to publicly campaign for their father and therefore should be targets.

On gay Republicans:

"If you're a gay Republican, you're essentially given the rule that, 'It's okay, we won't hold it against you 'cause you're gay, 'cause you couldn't help it. But if you purport to be happy about it then we're gonna kick you out.'"

More—including an allusion to closeted Charlie Crist—here.
