Some Tig Comments (6)

Tig-NotaroBeing mistaken for a man now rankles this breast-cancer survivor

Tig Notaro has a moving two-page spread in the Vanity Fair (January 2013) comedy issue guest-edited by Judd Apatow, in which she discusses how her annus horribilis led to her instantly legendary stand-up routine in which she revealed her cancer diagnosis. Coming off of a life-threatening intestinal illness and her mother's sudden death, Notaro was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts. Deciding to confront it onstage was not an easy decision since she was never known as a personal-issues comic.

"I saw people grabbing their own faces in fear. Other people were knee-slapping. Everyone was processing it in their own time...The big picture of my story is that you never know what's coming around the corner. I need ot sit down, take a deep breath, and connect with where I feel there's humor these days...I could push a stool around Conan's stage for the rest of my life, but some of my other jokes...I just don't think I connect with them anymore."

Be sure to read the whole piece in the magazine or, when it's available, online.

Vanity Fair (October 2012) offers a first look at Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in character as Liberace and Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra. Not bad! Matt especially passes the giggle test.

Pop Will (Rep)eat Itself Comments (9)

Kurt Andersen has a great piece in Vanity Fair (January 2012) called "You Say You Want a Devolution?" whose premise is that popular culture, over the past 20 years, has not kept up with technology or science, simply repeating itself.

Gaga haters will love that she is shown alongside Madonna (above)—and in the same issue sporting a Gaga cover!—but the article isn't so much about Gaga as a recycler as it is about how in the 20th Century, massive pop cultural shifts came every 20 years or so, but for the past 20 years, our music and fashion and architecture and more have remained comparatively static.

Worth a read; I'll link it when it's online.

Boy Culture Turns 6: My Favorite Posts Comments (13)

IMG_7536Prove it!

As of midnight last night, it was exactly six years since my first post. It's been a tough thing to keep up with a dayjob and outside activities, and just when I think I might walk away, a valuable connection or interesting opportunity or a kind word comes my way. Thank you all for reading me.

Here are my favorite 100+ posts out of nearly 11,000. Please take some time to read (or re-read!) a couple and tweet or Facebook any you like.

xoxo Matt
