Fat Chance: GQ Writer Wants Plus-Sized Models Called FAT Comments (0)

What a wonderful life this is! #img #wwd #brawn #bodypositivity #effyourbeautystandards #bigandtall

GQ UK's Jonathan Heaf wants to make sure everyone knows he's an A-hole, so has written a piece on why we shouldn't call plus-sized male models—like Zach Miko, above—anything other than “fat.”

Really? So in order to make sure we are all striving to be healthy (a noble goal), the only way to do so is to use a pejorative description of anyone who isn't achieving what medical professionals consider to be a safe weight?

Does that mean when describing someone who is 60, we shouldn't refer to them as older or mature, but just old?

A man who isn't 5'9" or more should be called short?

To use examples of things that people can change about themselves, we shouldn't say someone is battling drug abuse but just cut to the chase and say they're addicts?

Most of the words I've listed are totally acceptable, depending on the context. There's nothing wrong with politely referring to a category of clothing/larger models as plus-sized; it would also be stupid to market clothing to people who are overweight by putting them in the “fat” section, modeled by “fat” people.

I haven't read GQ in years (how much longer will a print edition even exist?), but I feel confident that if I looked through it, I'd find plenty of articles that mince words. It's called being polite and respecting social niceties. To throw that away all the time is a great way to let everyone know you're a toxic jerk with a big, fat mouth.

Big Deal: Ashley Graham For SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, Ryan Reynolds In DEADPOOL Comments (0)

Sports-IllustratedParody cover/poster created by me from Sports Illustrated cover & Deadpool promo poster.

Strangely, a big deal is being made about Sports Illustrated featuring plus-size model Ashley Graham on its fabled annual Swimsuit Issue. (They hedged their bets, also giving covers to famous athlete Ronda Rousey and to minus-size—but not where it counts—model Hailey Clauson.)

I don't get it—she is a total bombshell. She may not be petite, but I have a hard time believing many man would take a look at her and decide she was too big for anything but maybe a size 2.

It's a good thing, don't get me wrong, but it's odd what passes for feminism and progress these days. Gloria Steinem makes one unfortunate joke and people want to sweep her into the dustbin of history, while putting a curvy girl on the cover of SI is a major breakthrough. Good to know.

Speaking of progress and the perception of beauty, I saw and liked Deadpool—I hate superhero movies, but it was fresh and funny. I get the appeal. Lots of nudity, including the already famous scene in which Ryan Reynolds fights nude.

But the entire point of the movie is that he has been made to look hideous and is on a bloody rampage to find a way to look like less of a “freak.” AH007The whole movie is un-PC; it's not that I'm complaining about it on a PC level. I just think that part of it feels dated. It reminded me of that old Alfred Hitchcock Hour in which Lee Majors (inset) plays a young guy who is killed in a car crash, and whose parents realize they have several wishes. Their first wish proveS that the wishing is horrifyingly, ironically literal, and yet his mom wishes her son alive, not realizing this would mean he would rise from the grave, horrific injuries and all. The father quickly wishes his son dead again, presumably to spare Mom from seeing her son so horribly disfigured.

I guess having seen plenty of disfigured vets, it just seems like ... isn't being alive worth looking kinda rough? And to be honest, Ryan Reynolds looks fucking hot even with the movie-magic makeup.

But a good movie anyway.

Chaz Bono Cites Body Dysphoria, Talks Weight-Loss Transformation With Oprah Comments (0)

Screen Shot 2016-02-03 at 12.34.26 PMVideo still via Oprah.com

People Magazine has an exclusive on Chaz Bono's Oprah: Where Are They Now? sit-down with Winfrey, in which he discusses why he never could've lost the weight he needed to lose without transitioning first:

I would have never been able to do it before [transitioning]. I was too disconnected from my body, and the dysphoria that I had with my body was too much to be able to have cared enough to anything like that.

He also tells Oprah that looking at old pictures of himself from before his transition is painful, and can be a reminder of bad times, rather than a nostalgic walk down memory lane.

Oprah: Where Are They Now? airs Saturdays (10 p.m. ET) on OWN.
