History's Hottest Movie Actors: My List (#100—#51) Comments (16)

Above, a bonus gallery of some of these 50 guys—shirtless!

My list of History's Hottest TV Actors went over really well...and also provoked some heated debates whose opening salvos invariably began with, "Where's ...?"

Now, I'm happy (and exhausted) to present the first of three posts detailing my personal selects for History's Hottest Movie Actors. This first post will cover #100—#51 in ascending order, the second will cover #50—#26 and the final post will be my Top 25.

I look forward to your comments, whether they are to lump praise or heap scorn, though I hope you will take all of this in the spirit it's intended—as my own choices and nothing more...

Pits-tom-cruise-2Back when he still had some of the right moves

Tom-Cruise#100 Tom Cruise (1962—) It's something of a statement to put one of the biggest movie stars of all time, and a good-looking one at that, way down at #100. While I haven't found him remotely appealing in years, there's no way I could overlook how scorching-hot he was in his early years on the screen, when he seemed far more connected and natural. With Risky Business, he did for briefs what Clark Gable had done for undershirts—except in reverse.

Sexy Sampler: Endless Love (1981), Taps (1981), The Outsiders (1983), Losin' It (1983), Risky Business (1983), All the Right Moves (1983), Legend (1985), Top Gun (1986), Cocktail (1988)

Michael-Biehn-shirtless-guysArnold who?

Shirtless-Michael-Biehn-the-fan#99 Michael Biehn (1956—) Cute when he was chicken—even when playing an obsessed fan of Lauren Bacall's—Biehn's doe-eyed looks quickly hardened, making him equally handsome as the more world-weary authoritarian or bad-guy types with which he'd become more identified. Could even rock a mustache without losing pretty points, as in Tombstone.

Sexy Sampler: Coach (1978), Hog Wild (1980), The Fan (1981), The Lords of Discipline (1983), The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), Rampage (1987), The Seventh Sign (1988), The Abyss (1989), Navy Seals (1990) Timebomb (1991), K2 (1991), Deadfall (1993), Tombstone (1993), Jade (1995)

Joel-McCreaWell, howdy, pardner!

Joelmccrea12#98 Joel McCrea (1905—1990) This iconic western actor got craggy later on, but was a beautiful piece of work early in his career, before the ten-gallon hat got stapled to his wavy blond hair.

Sexy Sampler: Dynamite (1929), The Silver Horde (1930), Lightnin' (1930), Once a Sinner (1931), Kept Husbands (1931), Born to Love (1931), The Common Law (1931), Girls About Town (1931), Business and Pleasure (1932), The Lost Squadron (1932), Bird of Paradise (1932), The Most Dangerous Game (1932), The Sport Parade (1932), Rockabye (1932), The Silver Cord (1933), Chance at Heaven (1933), Gambling Lady (1934), Barbary Coast (1935), Splendor (1935), Adventure in Manhattan (1936), Woman Chases Man (1937), Wells Fargo (1937), Union Pacific (1939), Sullivan's Travels (1941)

Actor-cornel-wilde-candid-portrait-outsideMild to Wilde

Cornelwilde1#97 Cornel Wilde (1912—1989) A Hungarian fencer who abandoned a shot at the Olympics in order to act, this Wilde man was more than just a cut-rate Errol Flynn—after early acclaim followed by a long run in B-movies, he reinvented himself as a director and had some success in that area. Virile and handsome, he had a build like a fitness buff you'd find bumming around Venice Beach, which might explain why he was in so many mainstream movies that feel like semi-legit upgrades of things that came out of Athletic Model Guild.

Sexy Sampler: High Sierra (1941), Knockout (1941), A Song to Remember (1945), A Thousand and One Nights (1945), Leave Her to Heaven (1945), The Bandit of Sherwood Forest (1946), The Homestretch (1947), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), At Sword's Point (1952), California Conquest (1952), Treasure of the Golden Condor (1953), The Naked Prey (1966)

Mike-HenryOh, Henry!

Mike-Henry-shirtless-Tarzan#96 Mike Henry (1936—) Every big-screen "Tarzan" was hot, but how many were hairy? Just Mike Henry, who only played the role in three movies. His other film work was pretty unspectacular, but considering he'd begun his career as a pro football player, it's not like he had pretensions to win an Oscar. Square-jawed? Squared.

Sexy Sampler: "Tarzan" movies (1966—1968), The Green Berets (1968), More Dead Than Alive (1969), Number One (1969), Rio Lobo (1970)

936full-christopher-atkinsBlue movie star

Hot-Christopher-Atkins-shirtless-sexy#95 Christopher Atkins (1961—) With the ultimate innocent look, this boyish blond became an international sex symbol with his naked role in the softcore classic The Blue Lagoon. He only had a few memorable screen appearances, but conquered the teen-mag world handily.

Sexy Sampler: The Blue Lagoon (1980), The Pirate Movie (1982), A Night in Heaven (1983)

Helmut-BergerI flipped for this Berger

Shirtless-Helmut-Berger#94 Helmut Berger (1944—) Forever memorable from his work in his partner Luchino Visconti's '60s and '70s films, in which he appeared as an impossibly beautiful and impossibly European object of desire. Don't Google him to see how he looks now.

Sexy Sampler: The Damned (1969), Dorian Gray (1970), The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970), Love Me Strangely (1971), The Bloodstained Butterly (1971), Ludwig (1972), Conversation Piece (1974), Salon Kitty (1976)

Banderas law of desireAlmodovar's male muse

#93 Antonio Banderas (1960—) Who can forget discovering this mouth-watering screen presence via Almodovar's films, in which he looked like a Spanish David while committing crimes against AntonioBanderas1-DUNSTEELnature? Then he popped up in Madonna's Truth or Dare, where the icon threw herself at him in vain. A man who could resist 1990-era Madonna? Once he was brought to the U.S. for films, Banderas's sexiness felt a little more canned, a little more stereotypically that of the "Latin lover." But he's certainly had his moments.

Sexy Sampler: Labyrinth of Passion (1982), Matador (1986), Law of Desire (1987), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), Tie Me Up! Time Me Down! (1990), Truth or Dare (1990), The Mambo Kings (1992), Philadelphia (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Miami Rhapsody (1995), Evita (1996), The Mask of Zorro (1998), Original Sin (2001), Take the Lead (2006)

Sal-MineoAll work and no Plato makes Jack a dull boy

Sm2#92 Sal Mineo (1939—1976) Not high on many other "hottest movie guy" lists you'll find, Sal ranks on mine for his interesting mixture of innocence (especially early in his career) and edge (especially off screen). Who would've guessed that the lonely kid from Rebel Without a Cause would be a late-blooming gay man with a strong fetish for defiling all-American boys (Bobby Sherman and Don Johnson, reportedly) and for tightie whities? Read my pal's bio to get the full scoop on Mineo, who was a complex and driven artist and man. Or just watch him on the big screen in the admittedly laughable Who Killed Teddy Bear? and then challenge me for including him here.

Who-Killed-Teddy-Bear-sal-mineo-30557053-450-250A cuddly teddy bear that would look great on your bed

Sexy Sampler: Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Crime in the Streets (1956), Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), Giant (1956), Rock, Pretty Baby (1956), Dino (1957), The Young Don't Cry (1957), A Private's Affair (1959), The Gene Krupa Story (1959), Exodus (1960), The Longest Day (1962), Cheyenne Autumn (1964), Who Killed Teddy Bear? (1965)

FarrellThe eyebrows have it

Colin-farrell#91 Colin Farrell (1976—) This bad news bear cub has been setting hearts aflutter (against brains' better judgments) ever since appearing in Joel Schumacher's beef-fest Tigerland. He reeks mischief both on and off the screen, lost his looks for a bit when the partying got out of hand, but has bounced back admirably to continue as a reliably good-looking lead.

Sexy Sampler: Tigerland (2000), American Outlaws (2001), Hart's War (2002), Minority Report (2002), Phone Booth (2002), The Recruit (2003), Daredevil (2003), Veronica Guerin (2003), S.W.A.T. (2003), Intermission (2003), A Home at the End of the World (2004), Alexander 92004), Miami Vice (2006), In Bruges (2008), Fright Night (2011)

Nickscotti2Hard to "Get Over" him

Ns2d#90 Nick Scotti (1966—) This tragically underused multi-hyphenate was sweetly funny in Kiss Me, Guido, a gay comedy that received a major release at a time when LGBT movies were making in the millions instead of the tens of thousands at the box office. As appealing as he was, he barely got a chance to make another impact in the movies, instead falling back on his modeling, his Madonna-approved singing career and a short-lived reality series that capitalized on his New Yawk roots. Movie experience aside, we're talkin' about hotness here, and he's always had that to burn.

Sexy Sampler: Kiss Me, Guido (1997); Detroit Rock City (1999)

Ryan-phillippeDrool intentions

Ryan-Phillippe-Men-Ryan-Phillippe-1-C0CWBN3T6D-1024x768#89 Ryan Phillippe (1974—): This blond bad boy with the succulent lips livened up numerous forgettable '90s flicks, but struck gold with the beloved, bad-to-the-bone Cruel Intentions. He's always had an omnisexual quality on-screen and, at times, a Warholian blankness that served him well in the otherwise execrable 54. Still in tip-top shape, he's ripe for a re-invention.

Sexy Sampler: Crimson Tide (1995), White Squall (1996), Invader (1997), Nowhere (1997), Little Boy Blue (1997), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), 54 (1998), Playing by Heart (1998), Cruel Intentions (1999), Company Man (2000), Antitrust (2001), Gosford Park (2001), Igby Goes Down (2002), Crash (2004), Stop-Loss (2008)

Christopher-reeve-picture-21Was Reeve your kryptonite?

Christopher-reeve-as-superman-wallpapers_23687_1024x768#88 Christopher Reeve (1952—2004) The most famous movie "Superman" was this classically trained stage actor, who spent his career trying to avoid taking easy, commercial roles and wound up missing out on some iconic movie parts and missing the boat to true movie stardom. His horse-riding accident, which left him paralyzed, captivated the world, as did the nearly 10 years he lived with his disability before dying unexpectedly. Watching him in movies now is a bittersweet experience—his physical beauty was captured forever, but it's impossible to forget how it came to an end.

Sexy Sampler: "Superman" movies (1978—1987), Somewhere in Time (1980), Deathtrap (1982), Monsignor (1982), The Bostonians (1984), Street Smart (1987), Switching Channels (1988)

Jason-Patric-shirtlessAre you a Lost Boy-lover?

#87 Jason Patric (1966—) Early on, he had the ridiculously dreamy beauty of a blond Maxwell Caulfield—I fell so hard for him in The Lost Boys I stopped wearing shirts with collars just in case. Jason-patricOver the years, he's solidified into a macho hunk, complete with hairy chest and penetrating glare. His only flaw was the hair situation—when it started to disappear, he held on to it in an unbecoming way. But other than that, I think he's one of history's most underrated male beauties.

Sexy Sampler: Solarbabies (1986), The Lost Boys (1987), Denial (1990), After Dark, My Sweet (1990), Frankenstein Unbound (1990), Rush (1991), Sleepers (1996), Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997), Incognito (1997), The Alamo (2004)

Michael-SchoeffingAn ache for Jake

#86 Michael Schoeffling (1960—) A coverboy and college wrestler, he made two memorable big-screen appearances as regular dudes who just happened to be nearly as hot as Matt Dillon but who fall in love with their wallflower leading ladies—in Sixteen Candles and Mermaids. Perfect teeth, enviable hair and a strapping build were his calling cards. Teenagers were more hooked on "Jake Ryan" than Clearasil.

Michael-Schoeffling-tumblr_lvq0imO7ju1qfdt53o1_r2_500Dream man of the '80s

Sexy Sampler: Sixteen Candles (1984), Vision Quest (1985), Sylvester (1985), Slaves of New York (1989), Longtime Companion (1989), Mermaids (1990)

Keanu-Reeves-Sexy-PhotoYou really Point Break my heart

Keanu_reeves_19#85 Keanu Reeves (1964—) While he's rarely given a performance of any depth, the depth of his beauty is enough to have carried this ageless, exotic-looking, unexotic-sounding everydude. Always so cute, his butt-baring photo session with Greg Gorman was a highlight of my '90s. And what's not to love about the persistent gay rumors, including the one that had him "marrying" David Geffen before that was legal anywhere?

Sexy Sampler: Youngblood (1986), River's Edge (1986), Permanent Record (1988), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), Parenthood (1989), Point Break (1991), Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991), My Own Private Idaho (1991), Speed (1994), The Devil's Advocate (1997), The Matrix (1999), Sweet November (2001), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

Jean-Cocteau-Jean-Marais-nude-beaching-1939Jean Marais outshines the sun on a nude beach in 1939

Orphee-jean-marais#84 Jean Marais (1913—1998) This bi French actor worked incessantly and was utterly exquisite, almost to the point of being too much, especially under the direction of his lover Jean Cocteau. He is a living, breathing—if two-dimensional due to the constraints of the form!—work of art in films like Beauty and the Beast and Orpheus. A true renaissance man, he was gifted in all the arts, not only in the art of looking good.

Sexy Sampler: L'eternel retour (1943), Voyage Without Hope (1943), Carmen (1945), Beauty and the Beast (1946), Les parents terribles (1948), Coriolan (1950), Orpheus (1950)

Hot-johnny-depp-27848407-500-69421 Hump Street

Johnny-depp1#83 Johnny Depp (1963—) One of Hollywood's least likely to succeed, considering his claim to fame had been in the laughable TV series 21 Jump Street (1987—1990) on the laughable new FOX network, Depp nonetheless quickly carved out a career so enviable he is still frequently cited by up-and-comers as a role model. Equally at home in blockbusters or in more personal statements (or, in the case of his frequent collaborator Tim Burton, both at once), he's been lovely to look at and more often than not a hoot. He hasn't aged, but whatever he's doing to retain his overall look has softened him and desexualized him in the past few years, at least for me. Teenage girls still routinely vote him among their favorite movie hotties.

Johnny-Depp-tumblr_m610uzQEoW1qk659fo1_500You can't Drape the willing

Sexy Sampler: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Private Resort (1985), Platoon (1986), Cry-Baby (1990), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Arizona Dream (1992), Benny & Joon (1993), What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993), Don Juan DeMarco (1994), Nick of Time (1995), Donnie Brasco (1997), The Ninth Gate (1999), The Astronaut's Wife (1999), Chocolat (2000)

Daniel-CraigEvery performance is right on the Moneypenny

Daniel-craig-yum#82 Daniel Craig (1968—) Thanks to his beyond rugged features, I'm thinking Craig might be one of my more controversial inclusions on this list, which is dominated by undeniably good-looking guys and pretty boys. But Craig's machismo and physical supremacy make him irresistibly hot to me, as hot as fellow "James Bond" Sean Connery in his own way. Well, almost.

Shirtless-sexy-daniel-craig-water3I spy, with my little eye...

Sexy Sampler: The Power of One (1992), Saint-Ex (1996), Elizabeth (1998), Love is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Road to Perdition (2002), Munich (2005), Infamous (2006), "James Bond" movies (2006—)

Tab-HunterTab Hunter gets captured by the gay

Tab-hunter-shirtless#81 Tab Hunter (1931—) The '50s blond heartthrob who, like Rock Hudson, was one of agent Henry Wilson's uncomplicated pieces of meat, never really grew as an actor. Still, he was dreamy enough (nicknamed "the Sigh Guy") to maintain a career as a lead for over 10 years. He was gay, something the press knew and heavily hinted at, causing him to beard up. He came out with an autobiography written in 2005 by his longtime partner, a beefcake aficianado who was Tab's #1 fan before landing him as a life partner. Dreams do come true!

Sexy Sampler: Island of Desire (1952), Gun Belt (1953), Return to Treasure Island (1954), Battle Cry (1955), The Sea Chase (1955), The Girl He Left Behind (1956), Damn Yankees! (1958), The Pleasure of His Company (1961), The Golden Arrow (1962), Operation Bikini (1963)

Bana-3-eric-bana-17769024-500-588Arms and the man

Eric_bana4#80 Eric Bana (1968—) This tall drink of water is yet another sexy Australian. Are they born sexy there? (Of course not. But you know what I mean.) He started as a comic, went international in a gutsy drama and has been a steady, often somewhat stoic, presence in films ever since. I love the blankness of his expression, into which so many things can be read—like Garbo.

Sexy Sampler: Black Hawk Down (2001), Hulk (2003), Troy (2004), Munich (2005), The Other Boleyn Girl (2008), Star Trek (2009), Deadfall (2012)

A-details-magazine-mark-ruffalo-0Do you like it Ruff?

Tumblr_m3kmx882m11qc7i8o#79 Mark Ruffalo (1967—) Of course the entire list is all about my own taste, but I'm aware how including Ruffalo on a list that avoids people like Leonardo DiCaprio could infuriate some. However, since the first time I saw him on screen almost 13 years ago, I've carried a torch for this cerebral, sloppy guy, the kind of guy who'd have to haul up his sagging jeans and would smell bad at the end of one day and who you could imagine doing serious damage to the object of his affection in bed—if only accidentally. He's one of the few actors on the list I've met and I can report he is beyond nice and has a great sense of humor—I thanked him, as one hirsute man to another, for showing off his hairy body every chance he gets and he loved that.

Sexy Sampler: You Can Count on Me (2000), The Last Castle (2001), View from the Top (2003), In the Cut (2003), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Zodiac (2007), The Kids Are All Right (2010), The Avengers (2012)

George_clooneyThrow me into the Clooney bin

#78 George Clooney (1961—) Though it's been said, many times, many ways, Clooney (who more closely resembles Clark Gable) really is like our Cary Grant, both for his handsomeness as he's aged (he didn't really make an impact in films George-Clooneyuntil he was a full-fledged adult man, unlike Grant) and his easy, charming demeanor in all of his features. I think Clooney has inarguably stretched himself as an actor far more than Grant ever wanted to do or did, and that, along with the former's intellect and sarcasm, only enhances the appeal of his physical comeliness. What I mean to say is: He's smart and sexy and so is overall just plain hot.

Killertoms1Sexy Sampler: Return to Horror High (1987), Return of the Killer Tomatoes! (1988), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), One Fine Day (1996), Batman & Robin (1997), Out of Sight (1998), Three Kings (1999), The Perfect Storm (2000), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Ocean's Twelve (2004), Ocean's Thirteen (2007), Michael Clayton (2007), Leatherheads (2008), Up in the Air (2009), The Descendants (2011)

Wow-Steve-McQueen-shirtless-sexy-hotHard work-out

Sexy-Steve-McQueen#77 Steve McQueen (1930—1980) It's hard to pinpoint what's so sexy about Steve McQueen (maybe not so much if you're using the above photo as your guide) because he wasn't gorgeous. But his rugged handsomeness and his macho swagger call to mind whatever it was that James Dean had—he was so cool, he was hot. And let's not overlook the, uh, body on that one.

Sexy Sampler: The Blob (1958), Never So Few (1959), The Magnificent Seven (1960), Hell Is for Heroes (1962), The Great Escape (1963), Love with the Proper Stranger (1963), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Nevada Smith (1966), The Sand Pebbles (1966), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Bullitt (1968), The Reivers (1969), Le Mans (1971), Junior Bonner (1972), The Getaway (1972), Papillon (1973), The Towering Inferno (1974)

Channing7_SSVHe's the man

#76 Channing Tatum (1980—) This one's blunt-faced, football-ready appearance is spiked with the remnants of his past as a model, making him less of a simple body beautiful and more of a hybrid—liking "Stanley Kowalski" in Valentino. After turning the teen world on with appearances in dopey comedies, he's since branched out into for-real leading man territory, and even further out into producing and helping to create the movies in which he stars. If Magic Mike spawns a sequel, he will have anchored no fewer than four movie series in the space of seven or eight years. It ain't magic, but he's got stardust to spare.

Tumblr_m6z70bPBlG1rsuifyo1_500Fred Astaire, eat your pelvis out

Sexy Sampler: Coach Carter (2005), Supercross (2005), Havoc (2005), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006), She's the Man (2006), Step Up (2006), Step Up 2: The Streets (2008), Stop-Loss (2008), G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), Dear John (2010), The Dilemma (2011), The Eagle (2011), 10 Years (2011), The Vow (2012), 21 Jump Street (2012), Magic Mike (2012)

Harrison-Ford-Blade-RunnerFord models

Harrison-Ford-shirtless#75 Harrison Ford (1942—) It's hard to believe he's 70 and still turning heads. One of the most-watched movie actors of all time thanks to his long run in the Star Wars and "Indiana Jones" films, he typifies casual masculinity and is the ideal strong, silent type. When he does speak, it's usually to say something sardonic and infuriating and arousing.

Sexy Sampler: American Graffiti (1973), The Conversation (1975), Star Wars films (1977—), Heroes (1977), Force 10 from Navarone (1978), Apocalypse Now (1979), Hanover Street (1979), The Frisco Kid (1979), "Indiana Jones" films (1981—); Blade Runner (1982), Witness (1985), Frantic (1988), Working Girl (1988), Patriot Games (1992), The Fugitive (1993), Clear and Present Danger (1994), Sabrina (1995), The Devil's Own (1997), Air Force One (1997), Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

Sean-Connery-gorgeousWonder if he needs some secret service?

Sean-connery#74 Sean Connery (1930—) A former beefcake model, Connery shot to fame as "James Bond" in 1962, a job he kept for decades and one that has cemented him as inarguably the best-looking and best-remembered man to play cinema's most famous spy. But along the way, Connery has been able to make himself useful in roles that didn't come with shaken martinis and pens that double as firearms, and has ascended to become one of Hollywood's greats. But anyway, when he was young to middle-aged, I just couldn't get enough of him in a swimsuit.

Sean-Connery-shirtlessDouble "Oh!" 7

Sexy Sampler: Action of the Tiger (1957), Another Time, Another Place (1958), Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959), "James Bond" movies (1962—1983), Marnie (1964), The Anderson Tapes (1971), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Robin and Marian (1976), A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Great Train Robbery (1978), Outland (1981), Highlander (1986), The Untouchables (1987)

Rob_lowe_shirtlessYou just got Robbed

Rob-Lowe#73 Rob Lowe (1964—) I often find myself studying the faces and physiques of freshly minted gay porn stars and wondering how the hell they got into porn instead of becoming world-famous movie stars. With Rob Lowe, I spent the '80s wondering the opposite. Litrully. No worries, though—his '80s output was like porn with clothes on anyway. What a gorgeous twink, and how impressive that with such a pretty-boy look and such a light screen presence he wound up looking more (the face and body) or less (the hair) ageless and being the one gainfully employed Brat Packer 25 years on.

Rob-Lowe-tumblr_m8gucbwGlc1qaqs9zo1_500He made me wet in Youngblood

Sexy Sampler: The Outsiders (1983), Class (1983), The Hotel New Hampshire (1984), Oxford Blues (1984), St. Elmo's Fire (1985), Youngblood (1986), About Last Night... (1986), Square Dance (1987), Masquerade (1988), Illegally Yours (1988), Bad Influence (1990), Contact (1997), View from the Top (2003), Thank You for Smoking (2005), Knife Fight (2012)

Sexy-Burt-Lancaster-shirtlessThe captain of my heart

Burt-lancaster#72 Burt Lancaster (1913—1994) Brawn with brains, Lancaster was a do-it-yourselfer who found fame late (he was past 30) but on his very first picture, The Killers. Perfectly suited to do genre work, he dabbled in that but via his own production company also stretched as an actor. He was at the zenith of his beauty in The Crimson Pirate, but remained synonymous with the male ideal in movies throughout his long career. Big lefty, too (rare among stars of the Golden Age), who helped fund Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was at his March on Washington.

23410_Crimson-Pirate-2Hey, butt pirates—it's pirate butt

Sexy Sampler: The Killers (1946), Brute Force (1947), Desert Fury (1947), I Walk Alone (1948), All My Sons (1948), Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), Kiss the Blood Off My Hands (1948), Criss Cross (1949), Rope of Sand (1949), The Flame and the Arrow (1950), Mister 880 (1950), Vengeance Valley (1951), Jim Thorpe: All-American (1951), Ten Tall Men (1951), The Crimson Pirate (1952), Come Back, Little Sheba (1952), South Sea Woman (1953), From Here to Eternity (1953), Apache (1954), Vera Cruz (1954), The Kentuckian (1955), The Rose Tattoo (1955), Trapeze (1956), The Rainmaker (1956), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), Run Silent Run Deep (1958), Separate Tables (1958), The Devil's Disciple (1959), The Unforgiven (1960), Elmer Gantry (1960), The Young Savages (1961), Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), The Professionals (1966), Conversation Piece (1974)

Robert-Taylor-hotAnd the bitch could even pull off horizontal stripes

#71 Robert Taylor (1911—1969) Ah, but the right-wingers are so handsome sometimes, aren't they? Such was the case with Taylor, though anyone might develop a thick skin after being married to Barbara Stanwyck for more than a decade. He had one of the most perfect faces in the movies and could act his way out of a paper bag—maybe even plastic.

Robert20taylorIt would be nice to be so gorgeous that it gets in the way of being taken seriously

8179-world-sexiest-people-hot-hugh-jackman#70 Hugh Jackman (1968—) Fit-as-fuck and apparently just about the nicest dude you'd ever want to meet, light in the loafers yet a macho beast when he stops shaving his sideburns and works out—Hugh Jackman is a study in contradictions that work well together, making him one of the most versatile (a boy can dream) male leads of his era. Handsome, built like a brick shithouse and with the voice of an angel, Jackman is also appealing for his eclectic taste in movie roles. But mostly it's his chest.

Tumblr_lu7aq9Bbo21qawywqo1_500The full-service movie star

#69 Farley Granger (1925—2011) Of all the movie stars I failed to meet when I had the chance, this Hitchcock everyman remains my greatest regret. I loved how his real-life homosexuality bled beautifully, subtly, into his greatest film performances, and then there are those proverbial limpid eyes. A great beauty with tremendous acting talent.

Henri-VidalOnly the good-looking die young—Vidal suffered a fatal heart attack at 40

#68 Henri Vidal (1919—1959) This French lead is someone you may or may not have heard of, but if your ears have been deprived your eyes have been downright cheated. He was very active in the Henri-vidal-1French cinema in the forties, a big, macho man with the fine features of a statue lovingly sculpted by a presumably gay artisan. Sidebar: His widow, leading lady Michèle Morgan, is alive to this day—she will turn 92 in February.

Annex - Valentino, Rudolph_NRFPT_01Sitting pretty

Sheikdressing#67 Rudolph Valentino (1895—1926) Valentino's exotic, naturally Art Deco looks for some reason don't readily translate to our modern tastes; he is remembered as a silent-movie icon, but few pant over him as they continue to do over Marlon Brando or James Dean, whose heydays came 30 years after Valentino's. During his time, he was derided as a pansy by jealous male movie-goers, and it's easy to see why—his delicate features and style do read as somewhat feminine. But thats part of what I find to be so alluring in him—like all great icons, he represents the male and the female and has a singular aura, like a great star at the center of a universe.

Clark_gable_1101Frankly, my dear, I don't give a—damn, I wish I was your lover

Clark-Gable-Handsome-Actor-1#66 Clark Gable (1901—1960) Clark Gable is a legendary hottie whose charms are largely lost on me—unless we're talking about the early part of his career. His intense hotness from back in the day is enough to pull him up to #66 even though by the time he was in Gone With the Wind, I didn't really find him attractive anymore. Maybe it was the cheesy mustache, or maybe it was the over-the-top snark (or maybe both at once was too much), but let's focus on the early years, when he could've boiled an egg by holding it one fist.

Lex-BarkerThis cat was quite a swinger

#65 Lex Barker (1919—1973) One of many "Tarzan"s on this list (and the tenth man to play him in the movies), Barker made for an exceptionally Nordic jungle man—forget about swinging on vines, Lexbarker_2you could ski down those cheekbones! Born wealthy, he looked it, even in nothing but a loincloth. Unfortunately, his memory is somewhat tarnished by allegations that he molested Lana Turner's daughter (yes, that one), and by the fact that he died young.

Sexy Sampler: "Tarzan" movies (1949—1953), Thunder Over the Plains (1953), Killers of the East (1954), Black Devils of Kali (1954), The Yellow Mountain (1954), The Man from Bitter Ridge (1955), Duel on the Mississippi (1955), The Price of Fear (1956), The Price of Fear (1956), War Drums (1957), The Girl in the Kremlin (1957), Jungle Heat (1957), The Deerslayer (1957), The Girl in Black Stockings (1957), Female Fiends (1958), Captain Falcon (1958), Mission in Morocco (1959), Son of the Red Corsair (1959), The Pirate and the Slave Girl (1959), Terror of the Red Mask (1960), La Dolce Vita (1960), Il cavaliere dai cento volti (1960), Pirates of the Coast (1960), Robin Hood and the Pirates (1960), The Secret of the Black Falcon (1961), Scarlet Eye (1963)

Robert_redford_gallery_new_2Blond ambition

11. War hunt#64 Robert Redford (1936—) One of the cinema's most durable leading men, his name became a touchstone for silver-screen studliness. A transparent blond, he nonetheless has favored opaque roles, often strong, silent types whose still waters run deep. His pairings with Paul Newman (who appears up the list quite a bit) were inspired and murder on the corneas for viewers torn between focusing on one or the other, and opposite Barbra Streisand he personified the beautiful man most people want so badly but can never possess.

Paul-RuddObject of my affection

Paul_rudd_98#63 Paul Rudd (1969—) I have a soft spot in my heart and also elsewhere for adorable, affable Paul Rudd, who in an endless string of films that are beneath his ingenuity and dramatic talent has convincingly portrayed the kind of goofy, awkwardly hot boyfriend who's good-looking enough to make hearts flutter but not so impossibly good-looking that he becomes an untouchable sex object. He's hilarious and has a nice body that sometimes gets lumpy but only in the best possible way. Husband material.

Hot-Sidney-PoitierCall me Mr. Tibbs—just call me!

Poitier-shirtless#62 Sidney Poitier (1927—) The first black man to win an Oscar and still a member of Hollywood royalty, he's got one of the screen's sexiest stares. His career is intertwined with the civil rights movement of his country, and to me there's nothing sexier than progress. Though the body helps.

Harry-Hamlin-Clash-of-the-Titans-1981A Greek god among men

Making-love-1982-01-g#61 Harry Hamlin (1951—) Growing up, Harry Hamlin's legs in Clash of the Titans truly helped shape my budding sexuality. I can't help it...I had a weird fixation on Lorenzo Lamas, too. But even though he later became a truly silly figure in the pop-cultural landscape, he was hot enough back then to cause unfortunate boners among gaggles of teenage boys watching him on Cinemax while spending the night at each other's houses. He had such a classical look he was one of the only actors who could star in a movie about gay sex and have a demure title like Making Love not elicit guffaws.

Sexy Sampler: Movie Movie (1978), King of the Mountain (1981), Clash of the Titans (1981), Making Love (1982), Blue Skies Again (1983)

Jake-gyllenhaal-1Gyllenhaal of fame

6a00d8341c2ca253ef017ee68cba5b970d-300wi#60 Jake Gyllenhaal (1980—) Toothy Tile—er, I mean, Jake Gyllenhaal—just has that movie-star grin, that movie-star nosejob, those movie-star soulful eyes. If he hadn't gone into acting, he would've had to be drafted into it. Often a bit flat on screen for my taste, he's still never less than PHWOAR! in the looks department. His best performance was alongside Heath Ledger (giving his best performance, too) in the mainstream gay-cowboy hit Brokeback Mountain, and it was also his most achingly romantic and sexiest. Well, he was pretty much a wet dream in Love and Other Drugs, too.

Marco-Dapper-spreadDining in and Eating Out

#59 Marco Dapper (1983—) One of the most smolderingly sexy hunks of man ever to appear in a movie—and I almost mean "a movie" literally in that he's only been in a handful of them. Marco Dapper ranks high on my list not because he's a legend in the league of Laurence Olivier but because he fulfills the list's purpose: You want hot, he's got hot.

Burt-ReynoldsHere comes the fuzz

Burt Reynolds#58 Burt Reynolds (1936—) The actor who most reminds me of Clark Gable, both for his trademark mustache (missing above) and for his sarcastic delivery also matched Gable's success as a top-earning movie actor for over a decade. Reynolds sure had it going on back in the '70s and early '80s, even if he lost it quite spectacularly by visiting his plastic surgeon one (hundred) too many times.

Randolph-scott-1937Pretty handsome, I'll Grant you

7557931850_87410b3855_b#57 Randolph Scott (1898—1987) That Cary Grant sure had great taste! The sexy movie star's rumored longtime companion was this tall, solid number, who made a name for himself in westerns while his more famous "roomie" churned out Hollywood classics. He had one of those great faces that withstood age nicely, though he retired from films some 20 years before his death.

John-Saxon-hotSax appeal

John-Saxon#56 John Saxon (1935—) This supermacho Italian dude has been a domineering presence in genre films for almost 60 years, ever since being discovered by stud whisperer Henry Wilson. That unrelenting brow! He's real jerk-off material for daddy lovers, which I'm sure is exactly what he aspired to when he was moved to Hollywood with stars in his eyes. He'll always be remembered for working with Bruce Lee, but I tend to think of him as the anything-but-generic ethnic bad cop in a slew of movies and TV shows. Would've looked even hotter sans the rug.

Jim_brownJim Brown, shooting all over the place

#55 Jim Brown (1936—) Years ago, an elderly acquaintance of mine, when discussing Connie Francis's rape by a black man, looked off into the distance and muttered, "That's...gotta be tough." It Jim-Brown-shirtless-Raquel-Welchwasn't just the rape she meant. I think for people of her generation, the myth of the black superpenis was particularly frightening/titillating. Imagine, then, seeing Raquel Welch buddying up with football player Jim Brown in 100 Rifles—both at the peak of their physical perfection. For fans of the football legend, a pass would've been welcome at any time.

Dennis-quaidDoes Quaid make you randy?

Dennis-Quaid-so-hot#54 Dennis Quaid (1954—) Quaid has always tickled my fancy, I think because he is an all-American type of guy (and epitome of late '70s/early '80s sinewy hunkdom) who always appears ready to hop in the sack, one who looks like he'd do his damnedest to make it work out well for all involved. He also has a penchant for showing off his body in most of his movies, a body that is hittable to this very day. I recall seeing a still of him nekkid in The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia in an old Playboy and returning to it over and over, until my dad unfortunately discarded that issue. When I realized the issue was gone, I should have lit an eternal candle or something—it cut deep.

Roger-HerronHis movie flopped but he had a lot of involvement in the back end

Roger-Herren#53 Roger Herren (1945—) The least exposed and yet most exposed hottie on this list, Roger Herren's sole movie credit is as hunky, moronic "Rusty Godowski" in the ill-fated adaptation of Gore Vidal's brilliant Myra Breckinridge. His co-star, Raquel Welch, has said recently that Herren could not tell from the vague script for the film that his character would be ass-raped by Welch's strap-on-assisted transsexual character. When the film came out and everyone got an eyeful of him belted to a table being sodomized, the poor boy never acted again.

Ryan-Reynolds-shirt-openFor Ryan out loud!

#52 Ryan Reynolds (1976—) What a choice slab of Canadian bacon. Reynolds's wholesome face and holy-cow! body have catapulted him onto the A-list of male leads which, in turn, has led to a copious number of nude or near-nude scenes over the past 10 years. No complaints.

Charles-FarrellThe strong and silent type

#51 Charles Farrell (1900—1990) Janet Gaynor's on-screen romantic partner was easily one of the handsomest in silent movies, with a face any sculptor would admire, broad shoulders and an Charles2insinuating grin. He was so hot that he, of course, had to be one of the first male stars to appear in a nude scene—he did it in The River (1929), a film that is considered "partially lost." I partially lose it any time I see stills from that one myself.
