He Is A Gay American Comments (0)

April May 2015 - Larry Kramer HI

Larry Kramer is back with his new novel, The American People: Volume 1—Search for My Heart. He's an inspirational and terrifying figure, and his story of how and why he wrote this novel (started in 1975, when I was in first grade) is fascinating:

“Oh, I don’t know. Why does every gay writer start out? To write his Proust? And so I wrote my Proust. The title comes from that speech by Reagan which really did hit me, where I knew he was talking about ‘the American people,’ and I know that I was not part of that crowed that he was talking about. It was so obvious. There has never been any history book written where the gay people have been in history since the beginning. It’s ridiculous to think that we haven’t been here forever.”

Even if Kramer rubs you the wrong way—and he shouldn't—you gotta give him that.
