Ecstatic Portraits captures the breadth of his work, from experimental to narrative and to his more recent lyrical shorts. Van Devere’s films are, in part, portraits of young men in ecstatic crisis. Their journey is often isolated, provoking an overwhelming search for connection and belonging. From the statuesque John Harvard (Alex Breaux, Red Speedo) to the criminal mind of Edgar Allan Poe’s William Wilson, all  seek transcendence and their ultimate destination.
