But Crystal Griner, 32, a Capitol Police officer and a lesbian, did not have that luxury. When four people were shot by a crazed, homeless gunman, she did her job and sprang into action — and now Scalise, while still in critical condition, is alive rather than dead.
Griner would not have been allowed into the military before Obama took office, just by the way.
Griner was one of just three Capitol Police officers on hand during the shooting, and Republican politicians have said the event would've been a massacre without those officers. Griner rushed the shooter, as did Agent David Bailey — who is a Brazilian. (Immigrant alert!)
Griner is said to be the officer who killed the shooter:
It's also a nice twist that a woman killed the shooter, who had a domestic violence past.
Retired Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine told CBS News of Griner:
She is amazing and she is a hero. She epitomized what being a hero is all about.
Griner herself was wounded and remains hospitalized. Who's visiting her? Her wife, Tiffany.
