Madonna is the last big star whose life and career have been so expertly and importantly chronicled in magazine covers.

Yes, Gaga, Beyoncé and others pose for fabulous, memorable covers, but the value of being on the cover of a magazine has shifted dramatically; print is not yet dead, but it is in hospice.

For NNN, I wrote up a piece on 20 of her most essential covers, from the first to the most recent — and it serves as a little taste of my upcoming work with Anthony Coombs, the book MLVC60. The book will have less commentary, but you get the idea!
