The female cast of Crazy Rich Asians were named entertainers of the year, by Entertainment Weekly a reminder boost for the film's Oscar potential (hey, there are 10 slots) for Best Picture and/or Best Supporting Actress (Awkwafina) consideration. EW may seem meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but NBR and the Globes are also pretty fly-by-night. Feel-good and culturally important hits like CRA and Black Panther have shots this year.

Also on the list: Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga, the women of Black Panther (see above), Cardi B, Darren Criss, Donald Glover, John Krasinski & Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place may be a sleeper nominee), Ariana Grande and — hey, this is a gay blog! — the Queer Eye cast.

More importantly, the New York Film Critics have made their picks:

Best Supporting Actor: Richard E. Grant for Fox Searchlight’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Fox Searchlight)

Best Supporting Actress: Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk (Annapurna)

Best Screenplay: First Reformed (Paul Schrader) (A24)

Best Cinematography: Roma, Alfonso Cuaron (Netflix)

Best Foreign Language Film: Cold War (dir. Pawel Pawlikowski) (Amazon)

Best Documentary: Minding the Gap (dir. Bing Liu)

Best Animated Film: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (dirs. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman)

Special Awards: David Schwartz, Chief Film Curator at Museum of the Moving Image (who will be stepping down after 33 years) and Kino Classics Box Set “Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers.

Those all sound like strong Oscar choices, though I was unaware Regina Hall was being seriously considered.

Finally, the mysterious National Board of Review — which last year failed to select eventual Oscar winner The Shape of Water among its Top 11 films — has also spoken:
