Oscar Nominations — And Snubs Comments (0)

The Oscar nominations are here ...

The biggest snubs, in my book, which do not include people who had their fans but were never considered leading contenders (Toni Colette) in order from BIGGEST to STILL BIG, BUT LEAST BIG ON THIS LIST:

No Bradley Cooper for directing A Star is Born. This is a head-scratcher. The film underperformed in nominations, but still snagged 8 (including Best Actress, natch) — he is an Academy fave, an actor achieving a huge hit with his first directorial effort ... mind-boggling. Note: Normally, I'd think if a film didn't get a Best Director nom, it wouldn't be in the running to win Best Picture, but Cold War wasn't even nominated for Best Picture yet edged people out for Best Director, so while I don't see A Star Is Born winning, it ain't outta the running.

No Won't You Be My Neighbor? Sorry, but the doc category is voted on by A-holes. They routinely snub amazing documentaries that garnered mainstream attention (remember Salesman, Grey Gardens, Roger & Me, The Thin Blue Line, Paris Is Burning, Truth or Dare, Hoop Dreams, The Celluloid Closet, Crumb, This Film Is Not Yet Rated?). But this is a true insult to our intelligence. Fuck totally off.

No Ethan Hawke for his acting in First Reformed. Honestly thought this movie was garbage, but he was a lock for a nomination in what was clearly a career-high performance. What's he gotta do? Self-flagella — oh, wait, he did that.

No Justin Hurwitz for the First Man score. I'm not a fan of this dull movie, but this was a gimme nom. I now hope this clears a path for Mary Poppins Returns.

No Three Identical Strangers for doc. Again, a widely-seen, commercially viable doc on a popular, easy-to-digest subject. Why?

No Peter Farrelly for directing Green Book. I think Green Book, along with Roma, has a great shot at winning Best Picture, but its director was snubbed. The only reason this isn't higher on the list is the fact that Farrelly is not respected as a director overall, having turned in crowd-pleasing, low-brow stuff in the past, and was accussed of long-ago sexual misconduct during the voting period.

No Timothée Chalamet for his beautiful Beautiful Boy work. I do love him, but he was honestly gut-wrenchingly good in a just-okay movie. It's embarrassing to argue that Sam Elliot (who was fine) or Sam Rockwell (who turned in an SNL-caliber caricature of W) are more deserving. Even Ali is wildly overpraised in this category, and yet no room for Chalamet. Are the voters high?

No Emily Blunt ... anywhere. She and many other realistic dark horses (Foy, Cardellini, Debicki) were passed over for Best Supporting Actress in the also-ignored A Quiet Place, fine. But she campaigned hard for Best Actress in Mary Poppins Returns, too, and I would've thought that could have helped her nab a supporting nom.
