Hot on the heels of the announcement that Madonna has extended her record-setting number of Billboard Dance Club Songs #1 hits, I thought I'd put together this handy guide to which songs preceded and followed Madonna's #1s on the chart. It's not so much about Madonna as it is a microcosm of the diversity of dance music of the past 36 years.

The charts are a find for me, in that while I was always way into the Hot 100, I never realized how many dance hits I'd never even heard ascended to #1 on this chart. (The chart has been pretty pointless for 10 years, though, almost always allowing songs one week at #1 — very fixed-feeling.)

P.S. How did “Rescue Me” fail to hit #1?! Wonder if it wasn't considered officially serviced.
