Out Actor Billy Porter Makes History With Surprise Emmy Win! Comments (0)

Billy Porter is now the first-ever out actor to win an Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama for his excellent work on Pose as Pray Tell.

It was an evening of surprises, with the Amazon Prime (which sounds like a Pose character for next season) series Fleabag, with 11 noms, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series over Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who would have collected her 11th Emmy. Fleabag went on to win Outstanding Comedy Series, which shocked me even more.

Patricia Arquette — who talked about trans rights while memorializing her dead sis Alexis (who passed away in 2016) — deserves all the Emmys, but I thought Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects) would beat her out for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. The Act, however, truly was sensational, and Arquette was also great in Escape at Dannemora.

I was shocked Chernobyl won so much, especially that it beat When They See Us in the directing and limited series categories.

Jodie Comer beat Sandra Oh for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series — for the same show, Killing Eve.

Overall, it was a mixed bag, and I came out of it thinking I must be missing out by not having seen (or heard of) Fleabag!
