Did you watch the tribute to Stephen Sondheim upon the occasion of his 90th birthday Sunday night?
I'm a casual musical theater fan, but watched it all. For my money (and it was free!), the highlight was Meryl Streep, Audra McDonald and Christine Baranski drinking their way through “The Ladies Who Lunch,” but Linda Lavin girlishly crooning “The Boy From ...” at 82 was a close second.
Other stand-outs included Jake Gyllenhaal & Annaleigh Ashford, Donna Murphy and my friend — a big queen — says that Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters going lower-key wasn't as understated as I thought, but a choice, and that they were his favorites.
Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration started a good hour late due to technical challenges and featured recorded performances created in the stars' homes. It was staged to benefit ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty).
I would head to Broadway.com's YouTube channel for possible uploads of the event.
