Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), the smug right-winger who has adhered himself to Trump and the anti-masker movement — and whose relationship with a 20-year-old Cuban boy he calls his son has been the subject of much mirth — has been revealed to be the subject of an ongoing Justice Department inquiry over alleged sex with an underage girl.

The New York Times reports the investigation has been underway since Trump was in office.

It is thought the DOJ could charge Gaetz with a variety of serious crimes for allegedly paying the 17-year-old girl to travel with him for sex.

Even worse for Gaetz, the investigation started with an associate of his, also accused of child sex trafficking.

Gaetz has done himself no good with statements so far, including this one:

I only know that it has to do with women. I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward.

He then did a live interview with Tucker Carlson — and seemed to implicate Carlson in the mess:

Gaetz didn't do well, eh? Even Tucker Carlson thinks so, and said so, calling it:

... one of the weirdest interviews I've ever conducted.

People are wondering if Gaetz will resign, but I wonder if he'll off himself. He sounds guilty as sin and terrified.

Anyway, he is coming out of the gate crying extortion, so maybe he has some fight in him yet:

Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name. We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter...and my father has even been wearing a wire at the FBI’s direction to catch these criminals. The planted leak to the FBI tonight was intended to thwart that investigation. No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets...of the ongoing extortion investigation. I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations.

Don't forget that Gaetz once stood out as the only person in the House not to vote against human trafficking ... !
