POP BUZZ: In — of course — Florida, the Leon County School Board has approved a guide that will mandate parents be notified if a student “open about their gender identity” will be in P.E. or on a field trip with their own child. So the presumption is that these kids are automatically bad influences or even predators. This is far worse than going back, we are plummeting back in time. At best, this will encourage the current wave of openly LGBTQ+ kids to go back into the closet. What can they gain by being themselves, but bullying, ostracism and outing? (The policy claims the info would only be shared with the student's permission, but ... c'mon.)

HUFF POST: This always happens. A famous person says something intolerant or dumb or, in this case, supportive of transphobia and — even if it was unintentional — instead of listening to the criticism that what they said or did caused the issue, their response is: I AM NOT THAT THING. Bette Midler has been an LGBTQ ally (she was later to gay marriage than even some politicians, but I digress) — it isn't about deciding if she is a TERF or not, it's about pointing out that the article she loves is, in fact, anti-progressive and anti-trans. Why can't she just read it more closely and respond more articulately? Maybe she believes TERF things, maybe not. But I AM NOT THAT THING is just useless. Onward and upward, I guess. I don't think she'll become the new J.K. Rowling, trolling the world on every trans topic forever.
