Arthur Duncan, the trailblazing tap dancer who was the first-ever Black person who was a regular on a TV variety show — 1954's The Betty White Show — died January 3 at 89.

White famously kept him on her series after southern censors demanded he be fired, replying to them, “He stays. Live with it.”
