YOUTUBE: In a historic slap-down, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California), was denied Speaker of the House status for 13 votes. On vote 14, credibly accused sex abuser Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) became the sole reason McCarthy lost again, after having predicted he would finally clinch it. McCarthy dramatically marched over to Gaetz to persuade him, and Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Alabama) — easily IDable for his crappy toup — lunged at Gaetz, having to be restrained. (The camera on the incident inexplicably followed McCarthy rather than the full scuffle.) After another vote, the 15th, McCarthy became Speaker of the House. This kind of a lame-duck election for this post hasn't happened for 150 years, and is likely an indication of the weakness of McCarthy's position ... if he even holds it long.
One of the most brilliant speeches in our lifetime — Hakeem Jeffries opening the 118th Congress.— Christopher Webb (@cwebbonline) January 7, 2023
Let’s start with @hakeemjeffries giving Nancy Pelosi & others their flowers.

TWITTER: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — HAPPILY nominated by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-California) — gave a great speech to open the 118th Congress, honoring Pelosi as the greatest Speaker of the House of all time.
.@RepJeffries: "We will never compromise our principles...House Democrats will always put American values over autocracy...the Constitution over the cult...Governing over gaslighting...Justice over judicial... overreach....Maturity over Mar-a-Lago...Reason over racism." pic.twitter.com/CgyvyoLc3l— CSPAN (@cspan) January 7, 2023
He also had some nice alliteration going on.
POLITICO: In order to secure the speakership, McCarthy promised away A LOT. (And relied on some frantic calls from Trump.) Probably offered many things he can't actually make happen. But watch for massive social safety net cuts to be on the table. Will moderate Republicans balk?
MSN: A 25-year-old first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, was shot by a goddamn 6-year-old IN SCHOOL in Virginia Friday. She's now in critical condition. Where did a 6-year-old get a gun? Who taught a 6-year-old to take a gun to school and use it deliberately? I'm sure the new Congress won't take that up — they just had all metal detectors removed from the Capitol in time to celebrate the second anniversary of the January 6 insurrection attempt.

@cmg781995 These lovely employees got me detained at the coach in Bellevue. (Keep in mind my bag has been setting off sensors and nothing had come of it before this) I don’t usually buy #coach and I’m sad to see this is what I get for purchasing nice things for myself. I get #detained for #falseaccusations @Coach ♬ original sound - Colin
