Ryan O'Neal, who looked as uncomplicated as he was complicated, died Friday at 82.
The fair-haired boy of '60s TV — and the star of several classics, including Love Story (1970), What's Up, Doc? (1972), Paper Moon (1973) and Barry Lyndon (1975) — was, in his later years, possibly more renowned for his ill temperament than his work.

He was always a charming, crushable actor in his prime, and reconciled with his Oscar-winning daughter Tatum several years ago. She, too, nearly died recently. I hope she continues to get well and has many years ahead of her.
