So, the Emmys were absolutely great, and not JUST because Jennifer Coolidge thanked “evil gays” early on.
My one small criticism is that I kinda hate Anthony Anderson's mom. She was fine through John Oliver's apparently ad-libbed moment, but then I resented him checking in with her throughout the night in an obvious ploy to boost her brand
The rest was exactly how you do an award show — embracing nostalgia as a way of honoring your audience, and with almost perfect writing. I'm not a big fan of Anthony Anderson, but he made Jo Koy look like Bob Hopeless, and even had time for a rubber suit.
It was also a very queer endeavor, with GLAAD receiving the prestigious Governors Award:

Queer nominees and some winners (Niecy Nash nearly stole the show when she thanked herself for her win!) abounded, perhaps most impactfully RuPaul, who is now the winningest host and person of color in Emmy Ihardlyknow'erstory!
This will also be remembered as the Emmys on which Elton John became an EGOT, and as the show that ended with two male The Bear actors making out forever.

As for the rest of the show, cast reunions were joy-filled — I didn't even watch Ally McBeal, but found that delightful. Seeing Meathead and Gloria clasping hands across an empty All in the Family set was moving, too.
The In Memoriam was gorgeously performed and offered more of a focus on the dearly departed, though — much to my chagrin — producers still left out some pretty hard to miss names (Marty Krofft, Charles Kimbrough, Adam Rich ... more here).
