He was brilliant on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1976-1977), Fernwood 2 Night (1977) and America 2-Night (1978). He was also Col. Mustard in the big-screen version of Clue (1985) and an agoraphobe on an episode of The Golden Girls (1990).
Mull worked on such films as Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Jingle All the Way (1996) and 101 Dalmatians (1996).
Mull, who was straight, made LGBTQ+ history as one half of a rare gay couple on TV, playing Roseanne's boss, Leon Carp. His character's wedding to Fred Willard's (Willard died in 2020) on a 1995 episode of the show — the legacy of which has been besmirched by Barr's descent into madness was the first time a recurring character on a TV show was depicted in a same-sex wedding.
He was also Willard Kraft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1997-2000), on Arrested Development (2004-2013) and killed as demented Bob Bradley on Veep (2016), for which he was Emmy-nominated. Mull worked for many years as a fine artist — he had an MFA in painting, his original profession before songwriting and comic acting took over.
Mull is survived by his third wife and his daughter.
