I don't think he was dressed as Cooper Koch, but maybe. (All images by Matthew Rettenmund)
Saturday was about the seventh NY Comic Con I've attended, purely to people-watch and take photos of the more eye-catching costumes. It's a place where the people are mostly good-spirited, and almost all of them are eager to pose, so that makes it low-stress.
This was the best all day, and one of the last I took!
I did have one run-in — I asked a guy for a photo, took it, then shot his group at the table. It's kind of boring having NO atmosphere and ALL posed shots. The vendor promptly called me out for taking a photo without his permission, which was (1) not true, and (2) irrelevant. Sure, it's rude to run up and just snap, but it's also a public space and everyone's in costumes. It's an indoor parade. Plus, he was stressing that I didn't have a press pass — also not in any way required to take photos. Comic Con Karen!
On the brighter side, since I'm priced out of paying for photo ops — they're like $200 for a pic, $200 for a signature for, say, Josh Brolin — I discovered a group of celebs on the main floor, so shot the Good Times kids, some voice actors, Mike Copon (who I used to cover extensively when I ran a teen mag) and even ran into Taimak. Taimak was the star of Motown's The Last Dragon, and he also did some martial-arts choreo for Madonna's Drowned World Tour.
Anyway, here are some of my favorites. You'll have to fill in the blanks on the characters — this is not my world ...
They ARE Big — It's the COSTUMES That Got Small
Jimmie Walker, BernNadette Stanis & Ralph Carter — the Good Times crew
Mike Copon was a reliable teen dream, and is now a producer.
Gui Agustini looks this fresh after two-plus days of photo-taking.
Chris Britton has been in a million things, but was quite bemused that I wanted a photo of him at his table.
