LOS ANGELES BLADE: Longtime lesbian journalist Karen Ocamb, an invaluable contributor to our community, writes a painful remembrance of her friend Troy Masters, the Blade publisher who took his own life last week. As she writes:
Considered smart, charming, committed to LGBTQ people and the LGBTQ press, Troy’s inexplicable suicide shook everyone, even those with whom he sometimes clashed.
Ocamb writes about how he had shared with her his battle with depression. He also wrote of being bullied as a teen for being obviously gay, and while that undoubtedly left a deep mark, he used it to become a professional advocate for everyone's rights and dignity. He worked at Outweek, co-founded NYQ aka QW and LGNY aka Gay City News, as well as The Pride L.A. He wound up launching Los Angeles Blade and working there for seven-plus years.
Such a sad loss.
