JOE.MY.GOD.: Meta has DELETED trans and non-binary themes from Messenger. So much for free speech.

THR: How Karla Sofía Gascón became favored to win an Oscar for her performance in Emilia Pérez, one of the most controversial broadly popular films in years. It's controversial because it stars a trans woman and has a trans narrative, mixed with a Mexican drug cartel and — of course — music. But it's also loathed by a lot of Mexicans, who feel its French director and largely non-native Mexican cast are cultural appropriators. I like what she says about hate, even if I'm no good at following her advice:
“I’ve gotten used to [the hate]. In fact, I love it. It’s my gasoline to then tell the people of the light: “You have won.” The more people hate me, the more insulting messages they send, the more I say, Thank you,” and the more I’m going to enjoy this moment. I’ve developed a taste for revenge.

TAMPA BAY TRIBUNE: A young Trumper who deliberately defaced a rainbow crosswalk got a sweetheart deal in exchange for pretend-apologizing.
EXTRATV: RIP Claude Jarman Jr., 90. He was he adorable kid who starred in the 1946 classic The Yearling, for which he was one of just 12 children to receive a Juvenile Oscar. Of the dozen winners, he had been one of three left — the final two being Margaret O'Brien and Hayley Mills, the last to receive one.

NYT: RIP Oliviero Toscani, 82. Toscani's Benetton campaigns were the most in-your-face, progressive, challenging images ever used to sell anything, and his own photography was lovely, too. He shot Madonna in 1983, though the images were unreleased for years.
AOL: The Grammys will go on as scheduled on February 2, in spite of the fires.
ADVOCATE: Gay business owners in D.C. brace for Trump 2.0.
ABC NEWS: Corrupt Judge Cannon has CLEARED THE WAY for the Jack Smith report on Trump to be released.
HUFF POST: Trump is purging the U.S. government of anyone and everyone who is not 100% loyal to him. That is already fascist.
THE MINDSHIELD: Musk tries to perpetuate myths about the L.A. wildfires, is shut down by actual firefighters.
TWITTER: People who think the response to the L.A. wildfires is botched are fucking stupid. The problem wasn't who was in charge or what resources were available, it was that Santa Ana winds coupled with historically dry conditions. A firefighter who knows:
“Mother Nature owned us,” says Orange County Fire Chief Brian Fennessy, who called the L.A. fires “unstoppable.” pic.twitter.com/pdsCuFOWSC
