President Obama gave a fiery speech tonight at a Congressional Black Caucus event in which he offered yet another full-throated endorsement of his onetime rival, onetime employee Hillary Clinton:
If I hear anybody saying their vote does not matter, that it doesn't matter who we elect—read up on your history. It matters. We've got to get people to vote. I will consider it a personal insult—an insult to my legacy—if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election. You want to give me a good send-off? Go vote.
That has to be his bluntest plea to date. He knows this election matters, and he knows that Hillary is not the lesser of two evils—but will Democratic voters get the message?
He also had sharp words for Donald Trump's assertion that there's never been a worse time to be black in America. Which, you know, duh:
He missed that whole civics lesson about slavery and Jim Crow.
At the same event, Hillary called out Trump's attempt to lay birtherism at her feet:
It’s not about golf course promotions or birth certificates. It comes down to who will fight for the forgotten. Who will invest in your children and who will really have your back in the White House. We need ideas, not insults, real plans to help struggling Americans, to help communities that have been left out and left behind. Not prejudice and paranoia. We can’t let Barack Obama’s legacy fall into the hands of someone who doesn’t understand that. Whose dangerous and divisive vision for our country will drag us backwards.
