Soller in the play that won him his award, and the spotlight in which to speak. (Image by Simon Annand)
Kyle Soller, accepting an Olivier Award for his performance in the gay-themed play The Inheritance, gave a moving speech about those who came before and those who were lost to the AIDS epidemic — referencing Brunei's barbaric new anti-gay law in the process. Watch:
In 2014, Sharon Osbourne became one of many celebrities to announce she would boycott the Beverly Hills Hotel due to its owner, the Sultan of Brunei; the Sultan has approved the death penalty for homosexual acts in his country while maintaining a playboy lifestyle of his own.
Others have pushed back against boycotting the hotel, arguing that the livelihoods of its employees should trump where the money ultimately goes.
Regardless of whether you are sympathetic to the boycott, isn't it odd that the boycott—with no concessions from the Sultan—has fallen by the wayside? Celebs have gone back (including Taylor Swift and many more), and even Osbourne, who had urged her fans and friends to stay away, is reportedly currently staying at the hotel and shopping there, too.
I guess being concerned about gay rights is soooooo 2014.
I posted a polite note on Osbourne's Facebook page asking why she's had a change of heart about the hotel. It's not like there aren't a zillion others nearby.
