WHEN WE RISE: A Valiant Effort Comments (0)

When We Rise, ABC's miniseries event written by Dustin Lance Black to capture the long arc of the gay-rights movement, debuts February 27 on ABC at 9 p.m. Positioned as a gay Roots, it isn't, at least judging from the opening installment.

A terrific idea bogged down by too broad a scope — the creatives seemingly try to jam in every aspect of the LGBTQ movement from the early '70s on  — When We Rise is further done in by a canned, stagey quality with dialogue that's forced to cue viewers about significant milestones rather than allowed to serve the characters. That makes it more docu than drama, and leads to a preachy tone.

Among the performances, Jonathan Majors & Charlie Carver are briefly sweet together in a Vietnam War romance, Austin P. McKenzie has an ethereal idealism as young activist Cleve Jones and Emily Skeggs, whose character finds herself caught in the crossfire between the feminist and lesbian movements, nails the mix between personal coming-of-age and finding one's greater purpose.

Guy Pearce doesn't come off nearly as well.

Famous faces like him— Rosie O'Donnell, Whoopi Goldberg, Rachel Griffiths — tend to feel like stars whose presence helped get this made; friendly faces, but distracting more than acting.

Though When We Rise is by no means great drama, let's hope it will draw in some non-gay viewers desperately in need of some enlightenment, and some LGBTQ viewers desperately in need of reminding that people fought and died for their rights — and that those rights could be in the process of going up in smoke.

Bottom line: Commendable endeavor, informative, occasionally quite watchable, but not great art. If you can live with that, you might find yourself hooked for the run.

Dustin Lance Black On Trans Actors In WHEN WE RISE Comments (0)

Via PrideSource: Dustin Lance Black (pictured; image via ABC) wants trans people in trans roles:

First and foremost, when I'm casting any role, I'm gonna look for somebody who can DLBmain bring a part of their experience to the role. They still have to be a great actor, so if I can't find anyone in the world who shares some experience that they're about to portray in this character, who's also a good actor, then I'll happily go for someone else. And the big surprise is, it was not hard to find amazing trans actors and actresses to play these parts. What was difficult was deciding who to cast because so many great tapes came in. So, I call bullshit on Hollywood if they say it's difficult. And if they think it's difficult, then they should call our casting directors because they found unbelievable trans actors and actresses, and it was actually tough to decide who to cast.

Regarding why an out gay actor didn't play Harvey Milk in Milk in 2008, he said:

Years ago, it was difficult to find openly gay actors to play openly gay roles — that was difficult. When we were doing Milk, that's what we said we wanted to do, and the studio gave us full permission to do that. So, we called agents and manager friends and they all said they didn't have any gay actors or actresses, which is funny since I knew some of their clients were gay!

Tom Daley Opens Up On So-Called Cheating Scandal Comments (0)

Tom Daley got caught getting sexy online for a British fan, has said he was “on a break” from hubby-to-be Dustin Lance Black.

My only question is: Why did Daley talk to The Sun tabloid about this? He gave them extensive quotes and defensively assured them that he still intended to marry Black:

This will absolutely never happen again now that we’re getting married. The date is set, and we’re raring and ready to go for that wedding now.

Lance and I had a period of time apart, and then coming back together and realising we’re meant for each other.

I’m 22 years old, and if you talk to someone through social media it is what it is. It was nothing more than that. We never physically met.

But in the modern world this is what can happen — things are more accessible online, and distributed, and they spread like wildfire.

It just sounds desperate. I would have stonewalled any tabloids.

THE VILLAGE VOICE Previews WHEN WE RISE Comments (0)

Dustin Lance Black speaks to The Village Voice on his upcoming When We Rise epic miniseries, which chronicles the entire gay rights movement.

Choice quotes:

He claims not to have been totally shocked Trump won:

Most of the family I love are still very religious and live in parts of the country where equality isn't welcomed — and wasn't welcomed historically.

He is aiming the series at general viewers:

When I was growing up, ABC was the station we trusted. I thought, wow, this might be an opportunity to talk about LGBT stories in a way that reaches the people I grew up with. And wouldn't be just preaching to the choir. When I was writing it, I was thinking about a handful of aunts and uncles and cousins, and what it is they don't know yet, and the stories they haven't heard yet.

He sought diversity in the creation of the project:

It's called When We Rise for a reason. If you look at my writers room, it was gay and straight and black and white and men and women. And we hashed out those struggles in the room.

More here. When We Rise airs over four nights starting February 27 on ABC.
