I have not known anyone closely who has committed suicide, but its spectre is all around — not only in the media, via high-profile suicides, but also in the LGBTQ community.
A young person I think the world of opened up to me about his past suicide attempts and it really jolted me. I think a lot of older gay people are stuck in the mindset that Will & Grace fixed things and that being gay is not as big a deal as it used to be. That show and many other things in the culture helped immeasurably, but the fact remains that there is still a deep-seeded stigma attached to being gay or bi or trans or non-binary, anything that is not straight 'n' narrow.

I think a lot of my drag is knowing what’s come before me, whether that’s drag or fashion, and just really reinterpreting that. I know things that people don't expect some 22- year-old to know. I went into the werk room saying all these things, and trying to tell people that I knew what I was talking about and no one believed me! I got to show them and prove to them that I do.

Derek Chadwick — newly out actor, musician and Instagram model — claims one of the August 2018 GT covers.
Inside, the 23-year-old says:
Coming out in this way allows me to use the privilege that I have to help other people who don't have that. The opportunities that I've been given to have a voice. I feel like that was the main reason why I wanted to do this cover. I want to be the person that's at those rallies and events advocating for people and anybody. I never felt that I could do that unless I did this, and I think this is a major way for people to see visible queer people.
