Roger Sollenberger turned in a fascinating and terrifying article for Paste on June 1, and it's a long read I encourage you to prioritize.
Using his experience gaming Google for a drone company, he methodically lays out how pro-Trump forces have used Google to help disseminate phony information at key times when Trump is faced with damning new allegations.
He writes of the trend:
This is, of course, about the truth, and about the cognitive and emotional vulnerabilities of Americans. This is nothing new for propagandists. What’s different now is that this propaganda is being gamed by professionals in a massive, orchestrated data campaign at a volume, pace, and consistency that not only muddies the truth, but completely eclipses the truth. Destroys the very notion of truth.
I can describe it in no other terms but a war.
In describing the coordinated effort to spread misinformation, he notes:
... these sheep sites bleating that there’s no evidence of collusion are themselves evidence of collusion. Buried somewhere in that Time Magazine article is a real scoop: The FBI is investigating Robert Mercer’s data firm, Cambridge Analytica, along with Breitbart News for colluding with Russia to spread misinformation and manipulate the hearts and minds of micro-targeted Americans during the 2016 campaign.
Where is this all going? Read his piece and give it a think; we're either going to handle this, Trump is going to be held accountable, or we're not, and we — and the notion of truth — are sunk. Probably forever.
