Via Huff Post: GOP House Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) and three others were shot by a lone gunman at a GOP baseball practice early Wednesday morning.

The gunman, described as a white male, opened fire on a group of lawmakers and Capitol Police, shooting Scalise in the hip.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), who was at the event, described a scene in which Scalise, shot and bleeding, crawled in the dirt to escape the gunfire.

Paul said “nobody would've survived” had Capitol Police not been there.

The event for which the men were practicing is an annual game pitting Republicans vs. Democrats, and has been going on since 1909. The tradition of people getting shot has been going on a lot longer than that.
