Hillary Clinton's Full Apology For Her Reagans/AIDS Gaffe Comments (0)

Hillary Clinton, in a long post at Medium, has abjectly apologized for her egregious error in misstating the Reagans' legacy as it pertains to AIDS.

She wrote, in part:

I made a mistake, plain and simple.

I want to use this opportunity to talk not only about where we’ve come from, but where we must go in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

To be clear, the Reagans did not start a national conversation about HIV and AIDS. That distinction belongs to generations of brave lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, along with straight allies, who started not just a conversation but a movement that continues to this day.

The AIDS crisis in America began as a quiet, deadly epidemic. Because of discrimination and disregard, it remained that way for far too long. When many in positions of power turned a blind eye, it was groups like ACT UP, Gay Men’s Health Crisis and others that came forward to shatter the silence — because as they reminded us again and again, Silence = Death. They organized and marched, held die-ins on the steps of city halls and vigils in the streets. They fought alongside a few courageous voices in Washington, like U.S. Representative Henry Waxman, who spoke out from the floor of Congress.

Then there were all the people whose names we don’t often hear today — the unsung heroes who fought on the front lines of the crisis, from hospital wards and bedsides, some with their last breath. Slowly, too slowly, ignorance was crowded out by information. People who had once closed their eyes opened their hearts.

If not for those advocates, activists, and ordinary, heroic people, we would not be where we are in preventing and treating HIV and AIDS. Their courage — and their refusal to accept silence as the status quo — saved lives.

She also spends time laying out her record and her plans for the future on the topic:

For the first time, an AIDS-free generation is in sight. As president, I promise you that I will not let up until we reach that goal. We will not leave anyone behind.

After the jump, an I think reasonable assessment of the episode, and advice on how to process it and move forward. It's certainly wiser than the 20+ Hillary-in-prison memes that greeted one of my Facebook posts ...

Hillary's AIDS Gaffe Upstages Nancy Reagan's Funeral Comments (0)

Thank god I'm not a single issue voter, or she would have lost my vote with this insulting and farcical view of early...

Posted by Peter Staley on Friday, March 11, 2016

Speaking at Nancy Reagan's funeral, Hillary Clinton—out of nowhere—credited Ronald and Nancy Reagan with helping to start a conversation about AIDS. It was an WTF? moment that nearly every liberal listening recognized as balderdash.

To her credit, Hillary immediately apologized:

It's true that Nancy provided some valuable support to the stem-cell research battle (and it's lame to argue she did it selfishly; many people only get on board with issues once they've experienced them), but where Hillary got the inkling that the Reagans were big on AIDS is beyond me. It's very odd; Hillary was in the White House just two presidents later!

I think it's right to point out how wrong the statement is, but anyone deciding this means Hillary is lousy on AIDS or—here we go again, insincere—is just looking for reasons to think those things. What she is is a former first lady speaking at the funeral of another former first lady, one whose ideas about life couldn't be much further from her own. She was attempting to be gracious, and overreached.

If she'd doubled down, it would be troubling. An immediate apology should be good enough.

Belinda Carlisle and Morgan Mason's son James “Duke” Mason is probably working a lot of gay nerves this week—unapologetically loving Hillary Clinton (his mom's a Bernie, um, Bro), being sad that Nancy Reagan died (and attending her funeral today!) and now interviewing the blogger you love to hate, Perez Hilton.

But he does everything with such an open heart, even if he does something you dislike, it's hard to hold it against him.

Check him out with Perez after the jump ...

It Shouldn't Be In VOGUE To Whitewash The Reagans' Destructive Legacy Comments (0)

Teen Vogue—of all places—gets it absolutely right on Nancy Reagan (and her husband's) true legacy, especially as it pertains to AIDS.

Ironic, in light of his non-response (and his wife's non-response) to AIDS.

Reminder: Reagan's White House Treated AIDS As A Joke For Years Comments (0)

You can't miss this short film, which documents the first time a journalist (who happened to be conservative and anti-gay, but whose question was not coached in those terms at all) asked the White House—via Ronald Reagan's spokesman Larry Speakes—about AIDS. The film also compiles other homophobic comments and mockery surrounding gay people and AIDS.

I'd really be interested in a list of the reporters in the pool on these dates. Wouldn't it be interesting to ask them if they remembered these exchanges, and if they were among the people loudly laughing it up as people died—as late as 1984.

Speakes, like his boss Reagan, died of Alzheimer's disease. Kinsolving is approaching age 90 and still working.

The extremely powerful, simple short was written and directed by Scott Calonico.

To date, over 650,000 people in the U.S. have died of AIDS.
