Who will play Scotty Bowers in the new movie based on his life — and why is it being written by Seth Rogen and not somebody gay?

These are the big questions now that it's been announced that Luca Guadagnino will direct the adaptation of Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood from a script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Casting is not available, but I see someone like Taron Egerton, IMO. NO need for it to be a gay actor; Scotty, who died in October, knew his way around a penis but certainly was not gay.

I liked the book, I loved Matt Tyrnauer's far more interesting doc, and I am very hopeful that this movie will be everything that Ryan Murphy's Hollywood was not.

Or maybe even just be ANYTHING that it was not.

RIP Lois Bowers, 85. She was the put-upon, drily funny wife of Scotty Bowers, 95, the notorious pimp/hustler to Hollywood's Golden Age stars. She died this week, with no cause given. Details here.

Matt Tyrnauer, director of the documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, brought his baby to NYC's IFC for an East Coast opening — and in a last-minute surprise, his twinkling-eyed subject Scotty Bowers tagged along with him!

Bowers, in NYC for the first time in decades, was very witty in the talkback after the 7:35 p.m. showing Saturday evening (and in an intro for the next screening that I also captured), amazing considering the 95-year-old underwent dialysis the day before his cross-country flight and had attended a party and given several similar talkbacks at IFC upon landing. Even more incredibly, he went from IFC over to the historic Stonewall Inn, receiving admirers (and scarfing down pizza) until 12:45 a.m.

I guess I shouldn't be so surprised that Bowers has stamina, considering he claims to have had half a dozen sexual trysts a day during his prime, many of them with Golden Era household names. (It ain't often that you hear someone stating flatly, “I fucked Bette Davis.”)

It's no secret that I was a fan of the salacious Scotty Bowers memoir (full review here), and am an even bigger fan of Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, the Matt Tyrnauer documentary on the notorious hustler and pimp's storied life that comes out Friday, July 27.

One thing that fed skepticism in the tawdry stories from his book — but that also makes sense if you take him at his word regarding his countless couplings with A-list stars, randy studio employees, married businessmen and other assorted horndogs — was the absence of images showing Scotty with any stars, or at least in action.

As handsome as he appeared in old photos, especially during his WWII days, the now-95-year-old Bowers was sort of a blank slate. You knew what he was telling you he was capable of, and what he had done, you knew he was supposedly well-endowed enough to stir drinks with it, but you couldn't quite picture it. 

Imagining Scotty getting off with the likes of Spencer Tracy or gaily enjoying a threesome with Cary Grant and Randolph Scott got a little easier with the release of the doc, which — incredibly! — coughs up footage of Scotty at a Hollywood (no stars) orgy in the '50s or early '60s.
