INSTAGRAM: Student Daniel Mattingly gave a brave-ass speech at his Louisville, Kentucky, school that kicked things off with:
“Apparently, this school doesn’t know better than to give an angry gay kid a microphone.”
He originally wanted to speak about the trauma involving both of his parents dying of cancer. His teachers denied him, saying it was a downer. So he got approval for a fake speech and then trashed the school expertly, knocking the place as racist, sexist and homophobic before calling it “fucking ridiculous.”
Man alive, I thought I was a freedom fighter when I wrote a snarky Oral Roberts letter to the editor in The Flint Journal in the ‘80s. My great-uncles would tell my dad, “Oh, so, uh, Matthew has a way with words.” (But I can’t fathom having Daniel’s intestinal fortitude.)
