But the conversation she started will continue. She fought for women, even women who did not appreciate her, and her impact will continue to be felt.

As a postscript, when I was updating my Madonna book 11 years ago, I asked 100 celebs to contribute a one-word thought on the Queen of Pop. Steinem sent me this handwritten note, an example of how as a feminist she wasn’t quick to drag down women who were approaching feminism in different ways:
