I find it shocking the cast didn’t discuss this, but Eve argues that it was a very well-kept secret:

When Reed died in 1992, the initial obits stressed that he died of cancer. His pal, the actor Anne Haney, gave a quote that it was bowel cancer, neglecting to address his HIV.
Immediately thereafter, his death certificate clarified that HIV was a significant contributing factor. Reed’s life was one secret after another.
