NEW YORK TIMES: Barney Frank has died at 86, weeks after it was reported he had entered hospice care.
I think it’s sad that with his dying breath, the controversial liberal lion gave an interview chastising the direction of the Democratic Party. It felt so desperate and unbecoming.
HRC’s President Kelly Robinson says of Frank:
“Barney Frank was nothing short of a trailblazer. At a time when being openly gay in public service could cost you everything, he chose visibility. At a time when our community was being devastated by AIDS and too many leaders looked away, he demanded action. He helped pave the way for the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ stronger federal protections, marriage equality, and a future where LGBTQ+ people could see themselves not just represented but leading at the highest levels of government. We are holding his husband, family, and loved ones in our hearts as we honor his life of service.”
Frank repped his Boston-area district for 32 years from 1981, and was considered the first congressman to come out as gay voluntarily. His work on financial-regulation reform is probably as much a part of his legacy as his leading by example on gay visibility. The latter kept him in the news, including when Rep. Dick Armey (R-Texas), perhaps overcompensating for his own unfortunate name, called him “Barney Fag” in 1995.
Frank somehow survived the accusation that a male sex worker he frequented was running a prostitution ring out of Frank’s home. An investigation cleared him of that accusation, but did uncover that Frank had used his power to benefit the sex worker, Stephen Gobie, numerous. Frank chalked it all up to the pressure of being closeted and continued on in his career.
NBC NEWS: Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) lost his primary in Kentucky following an endorsement of his opponent by Trump. Massie pointed out he voted with Trump 91% of the time, only going against him when it was about “protecting pedophiles, waging war or increasing our debt.”
POLITICO: Trump has endorsed Ken Paxton, dooming Sen. John Cornyn … but likely teeing up a Senator James Talarico. Just you watch — all these Trump “wins” are November losses. Even Republican senators now think losing Texas is on the bingo card.
