Boy Culture Links: 'Masters of the Gay Universe,' Protecting Queer Art, Scott Pelley Fired from '60 Minutes,' RIP Peabo Bryson + MORE
JUNE 3, 2026
THE TIMES: The new Masters of the Universe has some gay innuendo to bring it into 2026.
YOUTUBE (SUBSCRIPTIONS APPRECIATED): Finally dropping my long chat with legendary choreographer Vincent Paterson, who worked with Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bjork, Shirley MacLaine, Barbara Mandrell and, well, everyone else! I asked him about coming out in the ‘60s and ‘70s, learning that his longtime partner had been murdered and, of course, all about working with pop royalty:
NEW YORK TIMES: In California’s intense, failed-experiment jungle primaries, Karen Bass and likely Spencer Pratt will advance to November’s mayoral vote. Bass has kept Pratt under 30%, even with another major Democratic competitor in the mix. Considering 70% of primary voters ignored all of Pratt’s recent free press, it’s hard to believe five months more of him yapping like Trump is going to convert a lot, lot of those voters to vote for him in a blue-wave year. But I hope Mayor Bass does not take that likelihood for granted.
Raman is doing fairly well in the newer vote dumps, but I’m not convinced by any of the experts yet that she could actually surpass Pratt. But that would, obviously, be ideal.
SAN FRANCISCO GATE: That same primary is most likely going to end with Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton advancing, though I keep seeing some speculation that Steyer — who has underperformed — could surpass Hilton as the remaining 50% of votes is counted. But Becerra, since the remaining vote will tilt blue, is a lock. He is very likely to win in November.
HUFFINGTON POST: State Sen. Scott Wiener (D), who is gay and is backed by the Human Rights Campaign, will advance in the race to replace outgoing Rep. (and Speaker Emerita) Nancy Pelosi (D) in California, going up against SF Supervisor Connie Chan.
HUFFINGTON POST: Iowa looks like it could go blue this year thanks to Democrats selecting Paralympian Josh Turek as their Senate candidate, and Trump’s pick for governor, Rep. Randy Feenstra (R), came up short.
NEW YORK TIMES: Progressive Adam Hamaway prevailed in a vast field of Dems to clinch the primary in a New Jersey district losing another progressive. I feel like if you look at other votes, centrism did better when the chips were down. (Notably Iowa.)
INSTAGRAM: If you’re running WeHo Pride and took part in deciding that MAGA Kathy Hilton should be grand marshal, you flunked Gay 101.
QUEER!ART: Queer!Art, a national org uplifting LGBTQ+ artists, is partnering up with RuPaul’s Drag Race star Megami to present a limited-edition tee.
PEOPLE: This is such bullshit. Scott Pelley bravely stood up to his MAGAt bosses at CBS and was promptly fired from 60 Minutes. Bari Weiss has succeeded in destroying a nearly 60-year-old series that has driven our culture and political discourse for as long as anyone can remember.
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS JOURNALS: A new study suggests that much of the U.S. is totally fine with electing gay men to public office … if they look and act straightish.
OUTLGBTQ: OutLGBTQ is a new “gay yellow pages” created by Norman Extract as a way to fully support nonprofit arts and theater orgs.
VANTAGE MEDIA: Teaser for Boy George & Culture Club is here:
EXTRATV: RIP Peabo Bryson, 75. He was the “voice of love” on “Beauty and the Beast” with Céline Dion and “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle.
