GR8ERDAYS: Eric Bauza, the modern voice of many Looney Tunes characters — including Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck — has died suddenly at 46 of hypertensive cardiovascular disease.

ROTTEN TOMATOES: I had a lovely, if melancholy, time watching the new Ira Sachs film, The Man I Love at NewFest38. The elegiac film stars Rami Malek as mercurial downtown celebrity Jimmy George dying of AIDS in the ‘80s, cared for by his deeply suffering partner (Tom Sturridge). A new neighbor (Luther Ford) arrives, ready to fall in love — caution be damned — as Malek’s magnetic character attempts to get through a play in which he’s starring, make sense of dying and position himself within his family before running out of time.
The film is unquestionably a nuanced work of art, at times uplifting but often troubling, and it tells its story with the help of a soundtrack so assertive I felt that at times it could have been a silent film with just the music, including beautiful singing by Malek and Rebecca Hall, who plays his sister.

It would make a very interesting companion piece with the 1986 film Parting Glances, and I also couldn’t help noticing that an important scene at the end was reminiscent in a way of Longtime Companion — the first film Sachs worked on when he moved to NYC, and another film about AIDS.
The Man I Love world-premiered at Cannes and will be in theaters shortly.
