Zafar Mawani & Guistrian Dior aka Guillermo Hidalgo Missing Near Mexico City
The married couple was last seen May 20 — anyone with information, please help
June 24, 2026
Revisiting this a month later, for anyone who happens upon this, we have since learned both of my friends were senselessly murdered after being robbed electronically of an undetermined amount of money. Their bodies (and two others) were recovered in Mexico, and as many as seven people in a kidnap-rob-murder gang (a woman who was a former cop there was allegedly involved) have been arrested and are under investigation.
I’ll never be able to really accept that this happened.

I woke up today to a surreal and crushing Facebook post announcing that my college roommate and lifelong pal Zafar Mawani and his longtime partner and husband of five-plus years Guillermo aka Guistrian Dior have gone missing in Mexico City.
I had just learned Saturday that they were moving there and texted him to ask about the timeline, receiving no reply.
To find out they were already missing — they were last seen May 20 in a car with people who were reportedly involved in providing elevators for disabled folks, possibly in this case Zafar’s elderly mom — turns my stomach.
They are warm, outgoing, gregarious, expressive guys. To think of the possibility that someone may have exploited that is the ultimate insult.
The guys would never not contact Zafar’s mom or their friends for so long. I can only presume they were taken against their will. I’m holding out hope that if they’re kidnapped, it will be resolved with them unharmed, but I’m absolutely terrified for them.
From Bernardo Cortes Acar’s (translated) FB post:
“I ask for your help if anyone knows someone from the US Embassy, SRE or media with whom I can contact and if they can make this post viral. Some friends of American origin and Mexican-American, are missing since Wednesday May 20, the last time they connected was at 18:20 hrs on their whatsapp. We know that they were going in the car of some alleged providers of elevators for people with disabilities, they sent their location, we think that already with fear, at the height of the MAC hospital of the south.
“Very sad the situation we live in Mexico, I sincerely thank everyone who can help me in one way or another.
“Thank you very much!”
If anyone knows anything, or was in touch with them recently, or has experience/advice regarding dealing with Mexican authorities in missing-persons cases, please reach out.
I have so many wonderful memories with these guys, and I want to make more.⚡️

I shared it on my Facebook profile plus to 3 groups for expats and immigrants here. Fingers crossed.
